How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Theft, Friendship & Musical Theater (...
by Marc Acito
Amazon Price: $15.96
Customer Review: Marc Acito's book, How I Paid for College, is a fast-paced, thrilling, completely hilarious read full of everything the subtitle suggests (sex, theft, friendship, and musical theater).
Follow the adventures of Edward Zanni as he struggles to find a way to pay for college after his father refuses to pay for acting school. This book is full of one zany adventure after the other, with each one topping the previous with laugh out loud moments.
The cast of characters is really what makes the book, which includes a very well-endowed jock turned theater guy, a cheerleader/actress who enjoys a little cunninglingus action done in one of the most creative ways I've ever read, an evil "stepmonster," a geeky jewish guy with a talent for breaking the law ... and on and on.
In the midst of all the laughs, Edward discovers who he is and the value of real friendship. That's the most charming thing about this book - the amount of heart in it.

The Ultimate Audition Book for Teens: 111 One-Minute Monologues (Young Actors...
by Janet B. Milstein
Amazon Price: $11.95
Customer Review: I often compete at middle school level speech tournaments and audition for a variety of plays, so I find it useful to keep a number of good monologue books with me. I found the monologues from The Ultimate Audition Book for Teens: 111 One-Minute Monologues (Young Actors Series) completely and utterly useless. The monologues are rather stereotypical. When I buy a monologue book, I am usually fully aware of the fact that I will only find two or three "excellent" monologues (for my purpose) and a number of "suitable" ones that I keep take note of in case a situation comes up where I might need them. In this book I didn't even find one that might halfways qualify for the "suitable" category. The monologues are empty. You can't take them anywhere. There is no worthwhile development in any of them. And they are all too short. If one is looking for good monologues, I would recomend Audition Speeches for 6-16 Year Olds, by Jean Marlow, and Great Monologues for Young Actors, which is edited by Craig Slaight and Jack Sharrar. My last recommendation would be to stay away from The Ultimate Audition Book for Teens and any other books in the series.

Echo Booming Monologues: 100 Monologues for Teens
by Mary Depner
Amazon Price: $9.56
Customer Review: After only a few of these one hundred monologues for teens,
it is very obvious this former drama teacher is in touch
with her audience. And it seems to me adolescents need to
start by expressing their real feelings (in and out of
plays) instead of grasping for the larger issues of Love,
Death and God they seem to think gain them more attention (I
only found one of these here, a child talking to his or her
dead mother at her gravestone). Each of these monologues has
a built in drama playing up the opposites possibilities of
its subject matter in a way to make and audience wonder what
will happen. And each builds to a climax that would allow
the actor to show off his or her strengths.
Some of the monologues struck me as more poignant that
others--"A Favor" in which a young person asks a friend if
the speaker can sleep over at the friend's house because his
or her father is acting strange; "Thanks, I Think" where a
guy gets a ring from his aunt but worries that it might be
designed for a girl; and "Jerk" in which the speaker finds
his or her birthmother but that person doesn't want to speak
to her child. These made me think there are real situations
that happen outside of the classroom and the author is
giving teenagers words they perhaps would have difficulty
finding on their own to express how they feel. That seems
very healthy and worthwhile in itself. Isn't it the same
reason we, as adults, go to plays, read books and attend
thoughtful movies? They help us express what we cannot.
When the monologues dip into the vernacular they seem less
genuine to me: "I came home from work and she was out of
there man. No, man. Yeah, it kind of sucks, but that's cool.
No note, no nothing. Yeah, dude I'm sure. Dude, I looked all
over the place. You think I don't look all over the place?
She's my mother, man." But there are cut-ups I knew in my
high school teaching days that I can hear doing "Money" with
its quirky logic and ironic conclusion. And were I the
teacher of students doing these, I would certainly ask why
they chose the particular ones they did. I can see many an
active class discussion following their answers.
I didn't really spot any clinkers. These monologues seem
thoughtful, field-tested and great tools for teac...

SADHANA in INTAQUAM
by rss@youtube.com (bombay63)
Sadhana born September 2, 1941 in Karachi, Sind, India) is a popular Indian Bollywood actress. Her family moved from Karachi during Partition in 1947. Her cousin was actor Hari Shivdasani (father of actress Babita).
Hari helped Sadhana enter films. She was a chorus girl in Raj Kapoor's Shree 420 in 1955. She played a second lead in a Sindhi film called Abana (1958), which got her noticed and entry to an acting school. The school was run by film producer Sashadhar Mukherjee, and also had another aspiring actress named Asha Parekh as a student. When Mukherjee was casting Dil Deke Dekho (1959), he gave director Nasir Hussain a choice between Sadhana and Asha to play the heroine; Hussain chose Asha.
However, for his next project, Love in Simla (1960), Mukherjee again gave his director, R.K. Nayyar (Raj Kapoor's assistant) a say in who should play the heroine. Nayyar chose Sadhana, and she was paired with Mukherjee's own son Joy Mukherjee in the film. During the making of the film, Sadhana and director R.K. Nayyar fell in love, and married in 1966.
R.K. asked Sadhana to style her hair with a fringe (like Audrey Hepburn); this hairstyle later became a craze and is still referred to as the "Sadhana cut" in India.
Sadhana's film Mere Mehboob (1963) with Rajendra Kumar was one that helped make her career and is said to have some of her most beautiful closeups in early Technicolor. However, it was Raj Khosla's "Woh Kaun Thi?" (1964) which really became a landmark in her career and gave her the image of the "mystery girl," where her spellbinding performance kept everyone guessing to the very end. The film became a huge hit and earned her her first Filmfare nomination as Best Actress. Khosla was so enthralled with her performance that he would cast her in two more big-budget mystery films, Mera Saaya (1966) and Anita (1967). She would earn her second Filmfare nomination as Best Actress for the blockbuster Waqt (1965), where she set another fashion trend with her tight churidar kurtas.
In the late 1960s, a thyroid problem affected her eyes, marring her looks. She went to Boston for treatment and made a successful recovery, but film offers had dried up. She delivered only three hits in the period, with Inteqaam (1969), Ek Phool Do Mali (1969), and Geeta Mera Naam (1974), which she also directed. After Geeta Mera Naam, she quit acting, saying that she wanted her fans to remember as a young, beautiful leading lady.
She lost her husband
after two decades of marriage, and had miscarriages. She now lives alone and does not like to be photographed. However, in 2006, Asha Parekh revealed that she, Sadhana and other 1960s stars get together for lunch to ease the loneliness and enjoy each other's company.

Dustin Weiskopf's Oscar Clip - Nomination for Best Actor
by rss@youtube.com (richtersaurus)
This was the role that garnished nominations for Best Actor at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, People's Choice Awards, Teen People's Choice Awards, Webster Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, SXSW Film Festival, and the BET Awards, and a Best Actor WIN at the MTV Movie Awards. This is acting in its highest, purest form. It is reported that master character actor Dustin Weiskopf will be opening up his own acting school in the fall of 2008, drilling the act of cajoling and browbeating into his students day in and day out until they can at least get an idea as to what he is capable of.
