Fiske Guide to Colleges 2009 (Fiske Guide to Colleges) by Edward B Fiske Amazon Price: $15.61
Customer Review: this is a good book, but i can't help but to think that the old school college guidebook is a little outdated in today's tech-savvy world. i'm looking for a searchable tool, somewhere where i can enter in specific criteria that i'm looking for in a college and subsequently find the perfect college for me. i'd realy suggest using a website such as www.campuscompare.com that incorporates the quantitative information available in such a guidebook with the student-reviews and digital media that reveals the personality of the school, all in a searchable database, online format that i am familiar with.
Cracking the SAT, 2009 Edition (College Test Prep) by Princeton Review Amazon Price: $13.57
Customer Review: We have been using the Princeton Review (Cracking the SAT) for several years now. Our instructors like it a lot. Our Math instructor was even more impressed with the SAT Practice Math Tests book. The English teacher said she also recommends the Essay book by Princeton Review.
CliffsAP Biology (Cliffs Ap Biology) by Phillip E., Ph.D. Pack Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: During my college biology class in High School, I would always do well in the labs but would do poorly in quizzes and tests. I received the book in the mail a day before my test. I read the chapter we were studying on the way to school and I easily passed the test.
The Official Study Guide for All SAT Subject Tests (Real Sats) by The College Board Amazon Price: $12.89
Customer Review: The Official Study Guide for all SAT Subject Tests isn't a study guide at all, as is the case with most if not all of College Board's study guide publications. This book includes only one previously administered test per subject area, which isn't adequate enough to determine the knowledge you have mastered in the subject. The exams themselves must be at least several years old, and the conversion charts reflect the performance of past years; test writers change over time as well as student competitiveness. The part that probably ticks people off the most is that NO answer explanation is included. Because this is the only SAT Subject Test book published by the actual test writing company, many have no choice but to buy this. Just because there are no other publications of previously administered exams doesn't make it right for College Board to sloppily take a past exam booklet and add answer keys. Another problem with this book is that half of it is foreign language exams. Almost no student takes more than one language test, if any at all. The foreign language exams are dead weight. The CD included only contains listening parts. College Board needs to do better, especially for the prices it charges students for the standardized tests it administers. Unless College Board updates the exams, adds an answer key explanation, or includes more exams, this book doesn't help much, but for $13 (Amazon) or $19 (College Board), it's better than nothing. If you think about buying it, buy it early, since you're most likely not going to take more than four SAT Subject Tests, and using it for just one practice test is a waste.
War As They Knew It: Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, and America in a Time of U... by Michael Rosenberg Amazon Price: $17.81
Customer Review: An excellent chronicle of an intense athletic rivalry set against the background of one of the most politically and socially tumultuous eras in modern American history. Rosenberg's in depth research and behind-the-scenes insights offer a glimpse of how two genuine titans in collegiate sports met the period's unique challenges of impacting young men...all the while establishing winning football programs in the traditional sense. Most deninitely "a story worth telling." Very well done!

Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think Abo... by Loren Pope Amazon Price: $10.20
Customer Review: The author makes a persuasive case for small, liberal arts colleges, many of whom are not well-known. He describes each school in detail, and does a very good job of pointing out each school's advantages. Initially I was quite impressed with the information.
What is lacking is very much information about problem areas or weaknesses of each college. The book is so laudatory, it lacks even-handedness. I am recommending the book highly, but think it needs to be complemented with a more balanced book. As an example, Pope (rightly, I think) raves about St. John's College in New Mexico, which uses the "Great Books" as primary sources. But, this praise needs to be balanced. Here are comments about St John's from The Princeton Review's "The Best 368 Colleges": "full of relentless intellectual duress..." " a school for super-geeks"...Everyone is a "voracious reader" and "kind of neurotic".
I'm not saying these comments are all valid, but they should be included for the reader's consideration.
Other than this criticism, I think the book is a great asset, and one we'll make good use of in researching colleges.
Cracking the SAT Math 1 and 2 Subject Tests, 2007-2008 Edition (College Test ... by Princeton Review Amazon Price: $12.92
Customer Review: Great math review book. Remember, it's REVIEW. The book expects you to have seen all these material in class before, but it's teaching it in a way and only little bits of parts of it: ALL you need to get a 700+ on the Math 2C/Math 1C SAT II tests. It's not saturated IN-DEPTH, so you probably WON'T get a 800 (85 percentile) with this book ALONE. Expect a 700+ if you review the whole book and the practice tests at the end. I got 710 and reviewed the book every day for 2 weeks, and took the practice tests, on SAT math 2. Make sure you buy Barron's if you want a perfect score , because it covers the material more in-depth; this is just a review!
Critical Reading Workbook for the SAT (Critical Reading Workbook for the Sat) by Sharon Weiner Green, Mitchel Weiner Amazon Price: $10.19
Customer Review: I teach SAT prep/review classes independently, and have been using the Barron's workbook for several years. The material is challenging, and provides students with a large number of high-frequency SAT words used in context. The vocabulary lists, root origins of words, and practice tests are all excellent.

Graduate Admissions Essays: Write Your Way Into the Graduate School of Your C... by Donald Asher Amazon Price: $14.93
Customer Review: This is a solid book that contained just what I was looking for. It gives good tips on how to approach the graduate application process and contact professors. Then it goes into tips for writing a statement of purpose.
Good book for a small price.
