West's Legal Environment of Business (with Online Business Guide)
by Frank B. Cross, Roger LeRoy Miller
Amazon Price: $158.36
Customer Review:
Bought this book because it was cheaper than Ebay. Book has a lot of information in it which may seem boring for most people.

Customer Review: This book is very interesting. Is fun to read and not boring at all.
I really enjoy it.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)
by J. K. Rowling
Amazon Price: $19.79
Customer Review: Overall:
--------
4.5 stars for Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix. It is dense, quick paced book with a lot of character development and life lessons for the characters in the story. The concept of Death and the implications of Death are driven home for Harry. The book is like "The Empire Strikes Back" for the Star Wars Episode 4 - 6 for the Harry Potter series.
Characters:
-----------
Harry is clearly a petulent teenager which is a scary thought given his magical abilities. I find Harry to not be very smart and keeps missing obvious things in plot as well as refuses to prepare himself properly for the upcoming battles / trials. Harry's disregard for advice by others is not something that should be encouraged in your readers. I believe JKR is trying to show the consequences of not studying and working hard but the consequences will need to be more dire.
Ron and Hermiene are showing more emotional growth and development that Harry to me. I do like to see that they are acting a bit more mature and seem to be learning from their experiences more. I do get tired of the nearly constant shout and temper tantrums by Harry.
Frankly, I find reading bits with Harry in it a bit annoying.
Story:
-------
The overall plot line of the Harry Potter saga is advanced quite a bit in the book. See other reviews for details (no need to recount them again here). JKR moves the story along to help set the stage for the Dark Lords return to full power. The theme of disunity and how it feeds the dark part of the human condition are large in the story. The death of Sirius is drastic blow to Harry especially the way it happens -- quick and due to carelessness by Sirius. The potential cost of their consequences is vividly demonstrated for the young characters in the book.
Action:
-------
The book has a lot of action in it. I will not go into all of the action scenes as other reviewers have done that admirably. The action is clean and crisp with enough pacing to keep you turning the pages late into the evening. J. K. Rowling's style for action is well established at this point and she keeps it consistent.
If you liked the other Harry Potter books, you will like the action and pacing in this book.
My biggest question regarding the book is why is the "Order" not killing off the Death Eaters one by one. It is fine to stun ...
Rules for Writers
by Diana Hacker
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: This is a top shelf book in my writers tool box. It is clear, concise, and informative. It has many good examples, and its flow chart approach to identifying and correcting typical grammar errors is easy to use. As a new writer, I find this book very helpful.
Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change
by Martin Silberberg
Amazon Price: $148.60
Customer Review: DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU'RE SELF TEACHING!
This is book is required for my general chemistry for science majors class. What a terrible book, I hope that there is a better chemistry text out there.
My first complaint is the large number of mistakes I've found in the book, usually a missing division sign or unit. Without searching I've found at least five in the two months I've been using this book. This is a fourth edition, for the price of the book and this many reprintings I expect a better editing job.
Secondly it is written from the stance that the reader has a science background and often I find myself puzzling over a single problem for up to an hour trying to figure out how the author arrived at the conclusion (And I have a science background). The writers make too many assumptions when writing out an example problem and don't adequately explain their reasoning. Each concept has two example problems, the first has the solution written out. IF you want to know the solution for the other "example" you're going to have to buy the solutions manual for an additional $65.
Third, the solutions manual has mistakes as well, even comparing the answer from the back of the text to the solutions manual the authors are not consistent.
There are not very many simple problems to drill a student with a concept, the authors approach is the exact opposite. Assume the reader "gets it" after a single example problem and then at the end of the chapter increase the difficulty level of the problem ten fold. The problems are good if you want a challenge and want to develop problem solving abilities, but are useless for developing the fundamental concepts that the book is supposed to teach.
I would recommend the Silberberg text to someone who wants a refresher, but if you're new to chemistry, avoid at all costs!

by June Jamrich Parsons, Dan Oja

The Bedford Reader, Ninth Edition

Customer Review: This is my secondary textbook for my college english course. But there are some essays and stories that I could see people reading just to read.
Society: The Basics
by John J. Macionis
Amazon Price: $78.31
Customer Review: After reading the first chapter of this book, I couldn't help but think is this what kind of education I am paying for? The poster who wrote that this is racial propaganda was being modest. This is communist BS. If you are white, you are rich and powerful trying to keep everyone down, if you are black you are poor and have no options, if you are Mexican you are unwanted...etc. This is stereotyping at its finest and the author doesn't understand that stereotyping goes beyond the meathead comments like "everybody knows you have to be black to play basketball". The author also gives an explanation of how racially divided sports like basketball and football (professionally) and has the audacity to state that the vast profits sports generate are controlled by a small number of people (predominantly white men).
The cynicism has stripped any credibility for me. The author could have stated something positive about how well blacks are at these sports and the majority of blacks in football and basketball is due to them outperforming others in their area and I guess multi-million dollar a year contracts are chicken feed. I get tired of this racial division being forced down throats of young Americans during their education. This type of material is moving to divide America through people who buy into this stuff. It reinforces stereotypes, creates hatred and cynicism from everyone's perspective, and doesn't even remotely give the impression that America is a great nation and place to live. This material is pounded into people's minds so much throughout their education that they start believing it and forget about the opportunities out there for all Americans.
I will do what a previous poster said they would do--throw it in the bonfire when I am done!
