Richard Heinberg is an excellent author, and I HIGHLY recommend that everyone read his (other) book "Party's Over" for a riveting & sobering understanding of peak oil! With that under our belts, many of us are now coming to recognize peak population, peak food, peak pollution, peak global temperature, peak fresh water, peak arable land, peak mineral resources, peak ocean fisheries, peak species diversity, peak uranium, peak weaponry, peak resource wars, peak wealth disparity, peak waste, etc. Peak Everything! That's what I THOUGHT this book would address.
Instead, he has cobbled together a collection of essays on aesthetics, psychology, language, and other aspects of peaking. Oh, it's okay stuff, but it's not at all what I expected nor hoped to read--and he warns of that in the first page of the introduction. The intro is sprinkled with charts showing peaks, but they're not really discussed in much detail.
This book is for those who already know a lot about peak everything and just can't stop reading about it. Discussions of Art Nouveau, Freud, and wild parrots were just too tangentially abstract for my expectations. I wanted hard facts and numbers for forceful arguments, proposed plans of action, and glimpses of hope in promising new breakthroughs.
It's hard to rate this fairly because it was so disappointing due to the misleading title. Chapters 8, 9, & 10 won me over to the fourth star. Chapter 8, "Bridging Peak Oil and Climate Change Action," was my long sought acknowledgement of the 800 pound gorilla: discussion of the two topics from a single perspective.
Please, Mr. Heinberg, now write the book on Peak Everything!
The 5-Minute Clinical Consult 2009, Book and Website (The 5-Minute Consult Se... Amazon Price: $77.32
Customer Review: I do like this book. Very quick and easy to look up information.
I wish I would have bought the package that included the PDA software bc I think I would use it even more.
I would like it even more if it provided acronyms to remember criterion as the USMLE books sometimes do.
Guide to Getting It On, 5th Edition by Paul Joannides Amazon Price: Customer Review: My therapist told me about this book and said it was not psycho babble, but edgy, funny, informative, and extremely helpful. Well, with that kind of reccomendation, I went to Amazon and found and bought it! It arrived quickly and that night I started reading, it is all the things my shrink said and more! Anyone wanting to put some spice in your sex life, for couples that are getting bored, and anyone else who is puzzled about their sex life, this is the one!!
Painless Childbirth: An Empowering Journey Through Pregnancy and Childbirth by Giuditta Tornetta Amazon Price: $11.53
Customer Review: Our culture raises us to fear birth, to dread birth. As a fellow birth doula and childbirth educator, I love having resources such as this book, which offers women a different way of seeing birth. Empowering birthing women, mothers, empowers society and us all. Brava!
Program Evaluation: Alternative Approaches and Practical Guidelines (3rd Edit... by Jody L Fitzpatrick, James R Sanders, Blaine R Worthen Amazon Price: $116.40
Customer Review: If you're new to the field then Program Evaluation provides a framework which makes sense of the various approaches. The authors have an easy style, sparing the reader from unnecessary jargon where they can. The introductory chapters provide a brief philosophical and ideological background to alternative approaches to evaluation. I came across this text during an introductory course in Instructional Design so it helped to place evaluation with what I had already covered on learning theory.
The Essential Guide to Hysterectomy by Lauren F. Streicher Amazon Price: $13.57
Customer Review: This book covers the several different surgical procedures that can be used to perform a hysterectomy and answered many questions for me as to what to expect in terms of outcome and recovery. I thought it was very factual and informative and written in a non-intimidating and understandable manner. It includes a commentary section from women who have actually undergone the procedure and their thoughts on how they feel now, both good and bad. Within weeks after undergoing my own hysterectomy, a family member called to say she was scheduled for the procedure, at which time I loaned the book to her. I would recommend this book to any woman faced with the hysterectomy decision who is looking to make an informed choice.
The Fabric of Autism, Weaving The Threads Into A Cogent Theory by Judith Bluestone Amazon Price: $12.21
Customer Review: I read the book quite some time ago and don't remember much of the details. All I know is that it convinced me to give the Handle approach a chance - to give my son a chance in life. We are in the fifth month of a Handle program directly under the author Judith Bluestone.
My son has changed so drastically within the last five months. I am very faithful to the exercises because I see the results which include being able to hear and see at the same time, being able to smell, being able to process sequences of sounds, being able to follow more than two commands, being able to use fingers on one hand without the other hand moving, becoming more social etc etc etc (My son is six years old).
The book comes with exercises to try so you can get an idea of what a full Handle program would be like.
I would like to add that my husband has a PhD in physics and works for NASA. He is very research orientated but when it comes to the Handle program, he just says "whatever you are doing, just keep going!"
