The Scarecrow Frequency - Ivory Skeletons of Dark Horses
by rss@youtube.com (somberatlantic)
10 Oct 2008 at 5:05pm

About Bill Mills and the sampling/footage: "Billy Mills was born on June 30, 1938 in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He is an Oglala Lakota (Sioux) Indian and he was raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Billy's given Lakota name is Makata Taka Hela which means "love your country" or more traditionally translated, "respects the earth". Billy grew up in poverty and was orphaned at the age of 12. He turned to sports as a positive focus in his life and took up running while attending the Haskell Institute, an Indian boarding school in Lawrence, Kansas. Billy discovered that he had a talent for distance running and he broke a number of high school track records. In the late 1950s he attended the University of Kansas on an athletic scholarship. At the University of Kansas Billy continued to improve as a distance runner. He was named a NCAA All-America cross country runner three times and in 1960 he won the individual title in the Big Eight cross country championship. The University of Kansas track team, coached by Bill Easton, won the 1959 and 1960 outdoor national championships. Billy graduated with a B.S. in physical education. After graduation Billy was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He focused on military life and did not train for a brief period, but soon he returned to running and posted times good enough to qualify for the 1964 Olympics. After training for 18 months Billy made the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team in the 10,000 meters and the marathon. The 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games No American had ever won the 10,000 meter race in an Olympics. Billy Mills' qualifying time was almost a full minute slower than the favorite's, Ron Clarke of Australia. The pre-race media coverage focused on Clarke and his expected duel with Mohammad Gammoudi of Tunisia. Billy went largely un-noticed. The field for 10,000 meter the final included many Olympic gold medalists and world record holders.... .....To date, no other American has won a gold medal in the 10,000 meters. Blue is for Nightmares
by rss@youtube.com (brokenbutterfly91)
9 Oct 2008 at 3:39pm

Stacey Brown, a 16 year old Junior at Hillcrest Boarding School, is a hereditary wiccan through her grandmother. Stacey wants to have a normal high school experience, but all that is hindered when she starts having terrifying nightmares about the death of her best friend and roommate, Drea. It is not the first time she's had nightmares, either. 3 years ago, the girl she used to babysit, Maura, was murdered. Stacey had ignored her nightmares about the young girl's death, and therefore Maura was killed. So now, she's faced with finding a way to interpret her nightmares, but they aren't always clear First Drea receives anonymous phone calls and chilling notes, but also receives lilies, which Stacy knows are the death flower. As they try to solve the mysteries, and as Stacey tries to correctly interpret her nightmares, a student is brutally murdered. Friends lose trust in each other, and secrets cannot be passed. Stacey is also distracted by Chad, Drea's on-and-off boyfriend, and people believe that he could be the stalker/murderer. And then one day, Drea disappears all of a sudden. The police are not that concerned, for their murdered classmate, Veronica, is still the big story. Stacey goes looking for her, into the woods she dreamed of so many times. She eventually finds Drea, along with Donovon, a boy who had a crush on Drea since the 3rd grade. After finding that Donovon was the stalker, Stacey fights for her and Drea's life against his madness. One day, at a seemingly normal dorm room at a boarding school in rural New England... Tragedy stuck! A fugitive from the law, using the code name "Bird" made his way into the building and held the residents hostage. Charlie, a resident kung fu master, along with AJ, a brave and daring student, and Judd, a renegade camera man, rebelled against "The Bird." Charlie was able to chase the bird downstairs, where Alex, the hero, scared the Bird out of the dorm room. Spaulding has never been the same since

boarding schools Books
Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, Book 1)
by Richelle Mead
Amazon Price: $8.99
Customer Review: This book started out a little slow, but a couple chapters in & I was hooked. The bond between friends Rose & Lissa is very compelling. Overall excellent writing & intriguing story line.

A Separate Peace
by John Knowles
Amazon Price: $8.80
Customer Review: This book is one of several that is most memorable from my youth. The main character is one that you easily like, his spirit is pure. Like Siddhartha he has his Govinda who follows him around. The spirit that the main character embodies is what makes this book special to me, that and the fact that it is set at Andover or Exeter, which ever one, during a more innocent time. This book to me is about innocence. Innocence is wonderful, people like that exist in the world. I think it is OK to fall in love with fictional characters to some extent. Maybe you will too. I highly recommend this book.

The Secret History
by Donna Tartt
Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: I have just completed reading this novel for a second time, having initially read it shortly after it was first published. Then, as now, I simply did not want it to end; and each time I put it aside, I did so reluctantly. The rarely seen, but always present force behind this novel is Julian, a classics teacher at an elite school in Vermont. Around him gathers a small cadre of select students. His students, all wealthy or pretending to be so, take courses almost exclusively from Julian ( a fitting name, for it was the Roman Emperor Julian who tried unsuccessfully to rekindle in an increasingly Christian Rome, worship of the fading, old Gods of the pre-Christian world). In The Secret History, Julian's students commit a ritualistic murder, seen by them as a sacrifice of sorts, and, then, murder one of their own circle who is perceived as being on the verge of disclosing their crime. Ms. Tartt's description of the family dynamics at the home of the fallen student prior to his funeral is richly detailed, yielding a level of authenticity that tenaciously absorbs the reader. Each of the students in her novel is convincingly described, and each in depth. We find Henry, for example, Julian's prize pupil, concerned about which classic text he should carry and display in Court to convey the right image, precisely what the reader would expect from this anachronistic young man. On second reading, my appreciation for Ms. Tartt's gifts only grew. The Secret History is simply one of the best modern novels I have read.

Last Christmas: The Private Prequel (Private)
by Kate Brian
Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: The Private series centers on Reed Brennan, a scholarship student, and the chains of events that unfold when she enters the Easton Academy and moves to the Billing House -- the most exclusive and sought-after girls dormitory in campus. Those who have read the series knows that she falls victim to Ariana Osgood after she starts dating seventeen-year-old resident hottie and rogue Thomas Pearson. Now we finally get Ariana's side of the story -- the things that occur before Reed sets foot at Easton. Ariana Osgood has always been a good girl. A constant overachiever, she gets the best grades in school, is a Billings girl, has a boyfriend who is a big Easton legacy, and has her eyes set on Princeton. But no one -- not even her best friend Noelle -- knows that she does it all to make her mother, who suffers from a mental illness, happy. She's never done what she wants. In fact, she doesn't know what she wants. That is until Thomas Pearson, the school's drug dealer, begins to seduce her. They end up stuck at Easton during a big blizzard on Christmas vacation. They are not supposed to be there, and they have to hide from the staff as well as from people who might rat their flirtation out to her boyfriend. Falling for Thomas changes Ariana in ways she had never imagined. But she doesn't want to upset her mother, which means she has to continue to live a lie. She is torn between living a lie and living her dream of being Thomas's girlfriend. Not to worry, because they will be together soon, won't have to hide any longer. Thomas loves her, after all -- doesn't he?

I like what Brian has done with this prequel. It is consistent to the things that go on in the Private series and manages to put on a few surprises as well. As usual in this unpredictable series, there are some twists and turns that will leave you gaping and wanting more. Ariana is humanized in this book, so much so that I felt sorry for her. The characterization is excellent. She has psychotic and obsessive tendencies long before everything unfolds. They are subtle, and Brian shows this rather than tell it, which makes it all the more brilliant. Speaking of great characters, Thomas is wonderful. He has his flaws, of course, but he is a far more interesting male character than Gage, Dash, and even Josh. If only Brian hadn't killed him so soon in the series. The one disappointing thing in this book is that Noelle seldom appears in this book. However, it is nice to see he...

The Sweet Far Thing (The Gemma Doyle Trilogy)
by Libba Bray
Amazon Price: $12.23
Customer Review: The first book A Great and Terrible Beauty in this series is irrevocably my favorite book. I felt the second book Rebel Angels was somewhat lacking. It was a great story but not such a great novel. The Sweet Far Thing is my second favorite. (*Spoiler Alert*) It is, of course, sad that Kartik dies. The reader is left in mourning. This I think is necessary. Truthfully I was saddened but also satisfied by the ending. Had Gemma and Kartik married and had the happily ever after, etc. (which would have proved interesting if not impossible in that era), I would have come away from this trilogy (sadly) even more saddened. It would have been too easy. Neither the second nor the third would have matched up to my great opinion of the first.
Some (if not all) fans may be screaming to wrench my hair out after me saying "it's necessary" for Kartik to die. To make my point short, to end such a beautiful story, it was necessary for the hero to make a sacrifice and in this the reader learns the trueness of their love.

A Great and Terrible Beauty (The Gemma Doyle Trilogy)
by Libba Bray
Amazon Price: $9.99
Customer Review: This one was just okay for me.

My only real probelm with it is that it was kind of slow. I kept waiting for things to pick up, but it didn't really happen. There was a little bit of action, but it wasn't as exciting as I expected.

There were good things about it too. Libba Bray's writing is great. Her descriptions make things so easy to visualize, and the concept is fantastic. The Realms, the magical place Gemma and her friends discover, are amazing. This book has the potential to be a great story; it just doesn't quite make it. However, it is good, and it's worth the time and money.

I would also like to say that this is the first in a trilogy, and the second one is great and much more action-packed. You will need to read this one so that you understand what's going on in the next two books. This one is kind of slow, but it has to give you the "background" parts. I would recommend this one so that you can get to the others.

Prep: A Novel
by Curtis Sittenfeld
Amazon Price: $11.16
Customer Review: I got a kick out of this book, which I'd call "beach reading." Miss Sittenfeld certainly provoked some opinions, didn't she? I'm not sure it was ever intended to be a social manifesto . . . just one character's experience. The people freaking out are just SOOOOOO "LMC" . . .

I must have been really well-adjusted or something.

Rebel Angels (The Gemma Doyle Trilogy)
by Libba Bray
Amazon Price: $9.99
Customer Review: I LOVED this book! The first book in this series (A Great and Terrible Beauty) was a little slow, but this one is absolutely captivating! Gemma is easy to like and easy to realte to. The story is interesting, the descriptions are beautiful, and the characters are complex and wonderfully developed. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. I wasn't sure after finishing the first one, but I decided to give this one a shot. I am so glad I did! Definitely, read this book!!

Charlie Bone and The Beast (Children Of The Red King, Book 6)
by Jenny Nimmo
Amazon Price: $8.61
Customer Review: This is a wonderful addition to the Charlie Bone series. I recommend it to anyone who likes Harry Potter-you'll find another young outsider to root for. This series is also a little less dark than the Harry Potter series, so it's easier for younger listeners to listen to.

Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy (Gallagher Girls)
by Ally Carter
Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: **SPOILERS**

I'm so glad I finally got my hands on this one, thanks to the library!
Overall, I like Josh more than Zach, so I was disappointed that she seemed to get over him so quickly. I also thought there'd be more about her mother, but no. The summary greatly over exaggerates this. I really hope the third book tells us more about her history, it sounds really exciting! This book did more to the character development, but it's still lacking in both writing and development, but yet again, the plot dominates.
Random bits of awesome. There was not one, but TWO, count them, TWO, Buffy references (Love how I'm catching & understanding these, EVERYWHERE). Kaitlin with a K and Caitlin with a C cracked me up cause I probably know a K/Caitlin with every possible spelling of the name. I was glad that we got to see Josh at all, cause at the end of the last book & the beginning of this one, I was doubting it, not so happy to see him with DeeDee, sweet as she is. [Although I kinda wish we could get her side of the story]. Wonder if we'll see him in the next book, or if his story's been told. Carter did a great job planting those clues making us all suspect Zach, I did not see that ending coming, not at all.
The scene where Cammie told her mom about seeing Josh and that whole part, that was definitely the best. I love that connection of theirs, and argh, I want to learn MORE.
And come on, don't tell me I'm the only one picking up a major vibe between Cammie's mom and Mr. Solomon! Let's hope we see some more of that in the third book!
