Prop 49: The 2002 Schwarzenegger After-School Initiative

In 2002, before the possibility of election via recall was under consideration, Arnold Schwarzenegger was considering a run for California governor. His advisors suggested he put an initiative on the ballot to introduce him as a political figure to California voters. The result was Prop 49, which earmarks by formula funding for after-school activities. (A good history of this episode can be found in Joe Mathews' book "The People's Machine, 2006.) Prop 49 was endorsed in 2002 by the California Teachers Assn. But when he was elected governor in the 2003 recall, Schwarzenegger did not keep a deal with CTA to fund education fully in the 2004-05 budget. As a result, CTA opposed Schwarzenegger during his 2005 "Year of Reform" campaign for 4 ballot initiatives, two of which were aimed at CTA. The teacher who appeared in the 2002 pro-Prop 49 ad seen in this clip thus appeared in an anti-Schwarzenegger ad in 2005. That ad is also shown. The sheriff of Orange County endorsed Prop 49 in the prop-49 ad. But as a portion of this clip shows, he was subsequently indicted for corruption and then resigned. The latest in the odd history of Prop 49 came in the much-delayed budget crisis deal of mid-Sept. 2008. As part of the budget compromise, elements are slated to be approved in a special election. Reports suggest that modification of Prop 49 is to be part of that special election.

Customer Review: I did not expect this book to amaze me as much as it did. Maybe it's the fact that this is based on the true story of the author's grandmother, but this book is written with such heart and love it will set you weeping. At the same time, it's beautiful, touching, and rich in inspiration and the human spirit.
Esperanza is a girl who lives the life of a princess in Mexico. However, the fairy tale syndrome strikes her when her father dies. Her cruel uncle demands her mother marry him, so Esperanza, her mother, grandmother, and the family of trusted servants head for the boarder of the United States where their life is utterly turned around.
No longer is Esperanza a princess, but a girl who has been given the opportunity to truly find herself in a brand new and terrifying world of workers and poverty.
Maybe some people would not want this piece of history romanticized, but the author reveals a certain beauty of just how incredible these people were in what they did.
It's edgy, romantic, and thorougly inspirational. The writing is almost like poetry.

Customer Review: I read a blurb about this book in Newsweek since Donna used to write for Newsweek. Thought it might be worth a shot. Was a whole lot better than I expected. It's a story of four teachers--Rachael, Phillip, Hrag, and Taylor. They teach at Locke High School in South L.A. It is mostly black and Latino kids and what they go through during their first year at the school. I have to tell you, I gained a whole lot more respect for teachers after reading this book. Why anybody would want to do this job, I don't know! It's a good read. You get into it right away. If you are a teacher or know a teacher, read this book, but I think anybody would enjoy this inside look at this remarkable school.

From examples to a detailed description of the format of the test, it certainly helped me feel very prepared. The only thing to watch out for is that the questions in the book are easier than those on the RICA (for the most part). So, I would suggest using it along with the practice test you can download from the RICA website. Between the two you should be more than sufficiently prepared.

Customer Review: This book is formatted so easily, it took me MUCH less time than I thought it would to prepare a unit on reader's theatre for my class. I used it for my high school theatre class so they wouldn't have to concentrate on large vocabularies, but rather to deliver the story in a simple, easy way. It was a HUGE success of a project and this book made it possible. It tells you how long each story is, what cast you'll need, and what reading level it is!! Yay!!!

Customer Review: I bought this book and the XAM CSET English test prep book to study for the English CSET. I was a journalism major in college and was able to pass all 4 sub-tests the first time!
If you buy a CSET study book purchase this one. The Cliffs book is far more reflective of the actual test. The questions and the layout are extremely similar--which is helpful when studying. It is accurate, clear, and concise.
If you get the XAM book I would only use it as a supplement and for the additional test questions. XAM was ridden with errors. I was afraid to rely too much for studying because of the obvious errors.
I am planning to keep the Cliffs book for a teaching tool. The XAM book I am selling back.
