John McCain on John McCain: NBC-WKYC-OH 09/23/08
by rss@youtube.com (TsquaredMM)
25 Sep 2008 at 7:50am

John McCain on John McCain "NBC-WKYC-OH" Interview TRANSCRIPT: REPORTER: The $700 billion, staggering figure, bailout bill now in front of Congress. Would you vote for it as its presently constructed? Why or why not? JOHN MCCAIN: I have not had a chance to see it in writing, so I have to examine it. I pointed out yesterday that I think it has to have several components. One is that we absolutely have to have oversight. We need the best minds in America to oversight it. This is the largest bailout in history, a trillion dollars as much. We need people like Warren Buffet, and Mike Bloomberg, and Mitt Romney to have an oversight of this. We cant put that responsibility in the hands of one person. I think the second thing thats very important to this is, we make that the taxpayers are going to get rewarded for this overtime as our economy recovers. And I think also, its very important that we have an oversight that is effective and transparent. Its got to be all transparent as well. And finally, the homeowners have to be a very big part of this bailout, because its the homeowners, and the Freddie and Fannie, and the cronyism, and old boy network in Washington and Wall Street that started this. REPORTER: [] How do you convince them that this bailout is in there best interests? MCCAIN: Well I have to see it and be convinced myself. Ill be looking at it, I have not seen the details of it. Ive had conversations with Secretary Paulson, who I admire a great deal. And we have to act, theres no doubt about that. The question is that I got to examine the details of this. REPORTER: Are you worried that this is going to get stamped through without proper scrutiny? MCCAIN: [nodding head], I am worried about that, but I also understand the need for urgency. So its a careful balancing act here, I expect to be making a decision on this very soon. And I understand the urgency and the fragility of the markets. But we dont want to do something that just bails out Wall Street, that really has Main Street at heart. REPORTER: Many people in Ohio remember the chapter some years ago of Lincoln Savings, and your involvement with Charles Keating, and trying to draw some comparisons between then and now. I mean, is there some relevance in that chapter, which I think you have acknowledged was maybe not your proudest moment? MCCAIN: Well I think the key to it is that Bob Bennett, who was the investigator said that I had done nothing wrong and that I was kept in that investigation for political purposes. He happens to be a democrat by the way. So look, it was a very unhappy period in my life. But the fact is that I moved forward and I have been the greatest voice for reform and against corruption in Washington of anybody. REPORTER: Was that a learning experience for you? MCCAIN: Well, I think it was an experience that obviously you would learn from every experience. But the point is that I have been on the forefront of every reform and bi-partisan effort in Washington in recent years. And Ive reached across the aisle to do that, and Ive taken on my own party. Senator Obama has never taken on his own party on any issue. REPORTER: [] No Child Left Behind, would you be in favor of reinstating that or renewing that? MCCAIN: Absolutely, but it needs to be fixed. Weve got to have the lessons learned. REPORTER: And your thoughts about Charter Schools? [] MCCAIN: Charter schools work, charter schools provide the competition necessary to improve public education. Were seeing that all over America today. They provide the competition, it may not be always better. [] LABEL: JM JM WKYC-05-OH 09-23-08 (RAD#277) UGV

Sweating the Small Stuff: Inner-City Schools and the New Paternalism
by David Whitman
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: In the book, Whitman details the strategies of 6 high-performing inner-city schools: 4 charter, 1 neighborhood, and 1 private (American Indian Public Charter School, Amistad Academy, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, KIPP Academy, The SEED School, and University Park Campus School). He concludes that they all have one thing in common: they are highly paternalistic.

In other words, all of these schools go to great lengths to manage every little detail of students' lives, no matter how small (hence the title). Though most of the schools' leaders reject the term "paternalistic," Whitman does seem to have a point.

In defining the term "paternalistic" Whitman builds on the prior work of Lawrence Mead, who once wrote that "the problem of poverty or underachievement is not that the poor lack freedom. The real problem is that the poor are too free" (p. 36). As Whitman writes, "the paternalistic presumption, implicit in the schools portrayed here, is that the poor lack the family and community support, culutral capital, and poersonal follow-through to live according to the middle-class values that they, too, espouse."

While I'm sure that many of the founders and leaders of the schools profiled would be hesitant to explicitly endorse either of these views, their schools certainly implicitly endorse at least something similar to this. Whitman makes a strong argument that these schools essentially strive to remove students from their current environments and inculcate them into a new culture -- in other words to accept the social and cultural norms of the middle or upper class and reject those that they see in the streets.

Whitman is, however, hardly a dispassionate observer. He makes no attempt to mask his contempt for liberals, "multicultural activists," and unions. The book is certainly written from a particular point of view -- which should probably not come as a surprise given that it is published by a think tank that also pushes a particular point of view. It is perfectly clear that Whitman wants more charter schools and fewer unionized teachers. That said, the main topic of the book is not one that should be particularly susceptible to one's ideological beliefs. He points out that despite the fact that many conservatives have extolled the virtues of these schools that most of their founders are, in fact, unabashedly liberal. In the end, the main purpose of the schools is to raise student achievement -- not serve ...

Stand for the Best: What I Learned after Leaving My Job as CEO of H&R Block to...
by Thomas M. Bloch
Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: This book is both compelling and insightful. The narrative is engaging -- how many young CEO's quit million dollar a year jobs with giant family businesses (H&R Block) to teach in the inner city?! There is a lot more to this book than boy goes to work for his Dad and leaves to teach. Tom explores the hardest and deepest decisions we all have to make, and on his road to self discovery, presents quite a road map for us to follow. In doing so, he also gives the reader a view into the world of inner-city education and charter schools. Bravo - a great read!

Spin Cycle: How Research Is Used in Policy Debates: The Case of Charter Schools
by Jeffrey R. Henig
Amazon Price: $21.45
Customer Review: This is an interesting treatise on the charter school movement in public education. Many of the performance issues in our school could be improved if the political nature of it was replaced with bipartisan efforts to correct them. Research results can be skewed to support any theory you wish to pursue. In the end, it's all about the students.

Fertilizers, Pills, And Magnetic Strips: The Fate Of Public Education In Amer...
by Gene V Glass
Amazon Price: $41.35
Customer Review: Glass's "Fertilizers, Pills, and Magnet Strips" is a must read for anyone interested in public education and its place within American culture. Glass uncovers how technological advances have shaped our way of life and way of thinking--a way of thinking that may explain why education reform efforts continue to flounder. As an educational policy researcher, I constantly grapple with why it is so difficult for policymakers to understand education. Glass adeptly and meticulously describes how the evolution of business practices, technological advances, and cultural fads have intersected and led to a narrow view of public education. His book has clarified for me why so many people have unrealistic expectations from public schooling.

Glass's writing is accessible, authoritative, and interesting. But, that is just the start. The real punch in this book comes from his creativity and innovation in weaving together the ways in which cultural processes have impacted how we see public education.

if you care about public education at all, you must read this book.

Charter School Board University
by Brian L. Carpenter
Amazon Price: $35.00
Customer Review: If you can't take your Board to hear Brian at a conference, this book is the next best thing. It is easy to use to create your own professional development for your charter school board. As a charter school board president, I have used this for my own board and require other boards to purchase it when I do their workshops. It is realistic and practical. The applications part is very helpful for further discussion. I plan my workshop around the book and add specfic local issues. I agree with all of the points that Dr. Perry made in her review and encourage you to get this book. Can't wait for the next book!

Charter Schools in Action: Renewing Public Education.
by Chester E., Jr. Finn, Bruno V. Manno, Gregg Vanourek
Amazon Price: $26.05
Customer Review: I found this to be a very helpful book as an education law student studying the construction of charter schools from a legal perspective. The authors do a good job of presenting facts and issues in a balanced manner. A fine editing job was done to avoid the pitfall of the work being completely entrenched by the writers' perspectives. This is a very thorough introduction for those not familiar with the charter school model or why it came to be. The writing is clear and succinct. MOst significantly, I actually ENJOYED reading this book as I found it to be a captivating read regarding a topic which has potential to be soporific.

Customer Review: I found this book to be so INCREDIBLY helpful, I was amazed. It was such a good step by step guide, I really recommend it.

Rhetoric Versus Reality: What We Know and What We Need to Know About Vouchers...
by Brian P. Gill
Amazon Price: $31.24
Customer Review: This book reviews the evidence about so-called "choice" models of education or "free market" models and their impact on education. In the end the evidence shows nothing, but it doesn't refute anything either. What Gill shows us pretty convincingly is that, at the moment anyway, this is a debate driven by ideology rather than by evidence. No matter on which side one falls, one can interpret the evidence based upon their perspective, since the evidence is inconclusive. Like so many other debates in our society we have to move beyond the "classroom effects" and investigate what the proponents or opponents really have as their agenda. This is an excellent book simply because it is one of the first systemic reviews of the evidence as opposed to the ideological journalism with which we are most often confronted. No matter one's perspective, this book is worth reading, because it will alternately challenge and support one's views.
