The Black Image in the White Mind: Media and Race in America (Harvard Univ. K... by Robert M. Entman, Andrew Rojecki Amazon Price: $11.56
Customer Review: The infomation in this book is very useful but the white authors seem to be trying too hard to fit into their perception of a black perspective. They create an "animosity" scale that puts every white person without exception as having a degree of hate toward blacks (why not an unbiased emotional scale why does it have to start with hate?). They also make a big deal about quoting movies in the 1980s as portraying black males only in a side-kick role but failed to mention the highest grossing movie Beverly Hills Cop staring Eddie Murphy as not only the hero but a cop! They also claim there is no term in the english language that insults a white person as opposed to terms like the "N" word, Really how about the term that is the whole theme of the book? How about "racist" if you use that on a white person see how hurt, humiliated and offended most of them become- Great information but does very little to promote racial comity when they attack people who read the book because they were interested helping make social changes.
The Chicago School of Architecture: A History of Commercial and Public Buildi... by Carl W. Condit Amazon Price: $27.00
Customer Review: This is Condit's most significant contribution to the history of architecture-- a must-read for anyone interested in Chicago, its architecture, and the broader themes of American vernacular inventiveness in design and engineering. Condit is not forgiving of the reader-- prepare to learn more than you might have planned about caissons, load-bearing structural systems, windows, etc.-- but on the other hand there's little or no sense of being instructed in "good taste" here, either. Condit makes a plain-speaking argument and provides the information to support it. Those who wish to delve deeper will want to look to Condit's two-volume study of architecture in Chicago, long out of print but still available used. There his strong-willed personality appears more forcefully and so does his penchant for the technical; one leaves the work with a richer vocabulary, a sharper eye, and perhaps a sharper tongue, as well.
Contempt and Pity: Social Policy and the Image of the Damaged Black Psyche, 1... by Daryl Michael Scott Amazon Price: $23.95
Customer Review: Mr Scott has demonstrated that the left and right have often distorted the African-Americans' humanity. This study serves to correct the position of Black folk and to return their humanity. Black folk are neither pathological as a group or helpless victims. Rather the African-American has faced discrimination and continues to face discrimination. Yet the solution to the African-Americans problems aren't exceptional, but rather are the result of years of discrimination. The African-American response has been admirable considering the discrimination we have faced. We have built our own institutions and thrived, irrespective of racism. Still a group with such baggage can go so far--so quickly. However, we deserve neither contempt nor pity--just a fair shake.
Reinventing Public Education: How Contracting Can Transform America's Schools... by Paul Hill, Paul Thomas Hill, James W. Guthrie Amazon Price: $25.00
Customer Review: After reading Reinventing Public Education, I believe that the only really hope for the future of American education lies in the contracting approach to public education that the authors describe. This is one of the only books on education I have ever read that understands that the problems with public education in this country have less to do with a lack of standards, poor teaching methods, or inequitable funding, than a system which fails to understand that schools are organizations that can only be successful through organic growth rather than government regulation. This book will appeal to both voucher supporters and ardent defenders of a public education system that is committed to educating all its students
