Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations
by Alex Harris, Brett Harris
Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: Twin brothers, Alex and Brett Harris, have weaved together principles and examples of faith in action in a book aimed at teenagers, but useful to Christians of all ages. They challenge us all to fight against low expectations in our society and culture, and do hard things, as the title of the book exhorts. At the age of only 19, they speak from experience. After reading the book, their website can be accessed to follow-up on their examples.

Cracking the SAT, 2009 Edition (College Test Prep)
by Princeton Review
Amazon Price: $13.57
Customer Review: We have been using the Princeton Review (Cracking the SAT) for several years now. Our instructors like it a lot. Our Math instructor was even more impressed with the SAT Practice Math Tests book. The English teacher said she also recommends the Essay book by Princeton Review.

CliffsAP Biology (Cliffs Ap Biology)
by Phillip E., Ph.D. Pack
Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: During my college biology class in High School, I would always do well in the labs but would do poorly in quizzes and tests. I received the book in the mail a day before my test. I read the chapter we were studying on the way to school and I easily passed the test.

The PowerScore LSAT Logical Reasoning Bible: A Comprehensive System for Attac...
by David M. Killoran
Amazon Price: $64.99
Customer Review: This book is very good and is very detailed on every type of question. Plus you can actually remember what you are suppose to do on each type. The only down side is that it's very long. But if you want to do your best on the LSAT, you should read this book. Give yourself a month on this book alone.

Notice that the conditional reasoning, formal logic, and parallel reasoning sections are probably the most helpful sections. However, these questions are by far the hardest on the logical reasoning section. I recommend saving them for last to make sure you get done in time, since they are the most time consuming. (Before I read these sections I incorrectly thought conditional and logical reasoning was far to easy to be worth studying, since I had an engineering background.)

In short, I recommend the following study method for the LSAT:

Introduction to the test: Look at the free stuff from LSAC

Logic Games: Read the book "Ace the LSAT Logic Games", by Get Prepped.

Logical Reasoning: read the book "LSAT Logical Reasoning Bible", by Power Score.

Reading Comprehension: don't read any books that tell you to highlight and underline stuff, you won't have time to finish the exam. Instead, read a bunch of novels to improve your reading skills if you were never much of a reader before. So ladies, read some romance novels, and guys well you know what to read.

Kaplan/Princeton Review: I don't recommend wasting any time with either of these books. They are much too basic. If you want to study for a couple weeks and just get familiar with the test, then these are fine. However, you won't do your best if you rely simply on these general books.

Lastly, make sure to put down all study books the entire week before the test and simply do practice exams.

The two exams I used Princeton Review to study for, I got 5s! In the other 4 subjects I got 4s. This book is the exact tool you need to push yourself from a 4 to a 5! It's great!

Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think Abo...
by Loren Pope
Amazon Price: $10.20
Customer Review: The author makes a persuasive case for small, liberal arts colleges, many of whom are not well-known. He describes each school in detail, and does a very good job of pointing out each school's advantages. Initially I was quite impressed with the information.

What is lacking is very much information about problem areas or weaknesses of each college. The book is so laudatory, it lacks even-handedness. I am recommending the book highly, but think it needs to be complemented with a more balanced book. As an example, Pope (rightly, I think) raves about St. John's College in New Mexico, which uses the "Great Books" as primary sources. But, this praise needs to be balanced. Here are comments about St John's from The Princeton Review's "The Best 368 Colleges": "full of relentless intellectual duress..." " a school for super-geeks"...Everyone is a "voracious reader" and "kind of neurotic".
I'm not saying these comments are all valid, but they should be included for the reader's consideration.

Other than this criticism, I think the book is a great asset, and one we'll make good use of in researching colleges.

Examkrackers Mcat Complete Study Package (Examkrackers)
by Jonathan Orsay
Amazon Price: $110.22
Customer Review: My score: 34M

BS: EXCELLENT review for science majors (non-science majors may need more background knowledge). The book is very clear on what should and should not be studied. My practice scores jumped from 10-13/14 after studying this material. Unfortunately, I choked in this section slightly on the real MCATs and that kept me from a score of 36 or 37.

VR: Decent strategies that made sense and worked for me. On average the practice and the tips upped me from 10 to 11 in this section.

PS: GOOD review for physical sciences. The equations they suggest you know are right on point. After working through this review section and memorizing the recommended equations, my score improved from 10 to 12.

Writing: This was not covered extensively and it need not be. My score is rather low, but as long as it's not J or K (two lowest), you should be fine. I scored rather low here more because I took the section lightly than because of the prep materials.

Overall... a solid review package at a reasonable price for science majors. More help with understanding may be necessary for people who have not taken college Physics, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, etc.

---

My recipe for the MCATs: Examkrackers Comprehensive study package, electronic flash cards (that I purchased), ALL the practice AAMC exams available, a few other simulated exams from other test prep companies (hand-me-down books), and STUDY, PRACTICE, and PERSISTENCE.

P.S. I was a bit worried about Examkrackers posting their own reviews of their product (since they have SO many more reviews than other test-prep books), but I assure you I am a real pre-med. Just check my profile to see my other purchases!
