First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg Amazon Price: $6.95
Customer Review: The book arrived quickly and was exactly as described. My class enjoyed the story. It was very cute and funny.
The Giver by Lois Lowry Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: As a teacher of learning disabled students...I can say that all of my pupils loved this book. Some of the ideas might need a bit of explaining, but it is a story that kids can really get into.
Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English Dictionary Amazon Price: $6.50
Customer Review: I use this dictionary quite a bit as it is small enough to be light and easy to carry and big enough to contain most everyday words. I think that the content is good but I compared to my other (larger) dictionary by Harper Collins the paper is somewhat gray and the words don't stand out as well. Also the ink is not the most permanent so if you are not careful you can end up with gray stains on your fingertips. I would recommend spending slightly more to get something with a higher quality of paper and printing.
Bob Books, Set 1: Beginning Readers by Bobby Lynn Maslen Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: When my son was 3.5 years old, a parent I knew from the private school my other child went to told me most kids were reading in kindergarden and that I should start working with my child to help him be prepared for school. Things had changed in the five years since my other son started school! Of course I went right home and started doing research and found the Bob books. My son was reading at a 10th grade level in 2nd grade and is in all advanced/honor classes now as a freshman. I credit this all to teaching him the joy of learning how to read at a young age and how rewarding it is to succeed. The reward system works well when things get a little boring when reading these books. They are very basic and I have to admit when I first saw them I wasn't sold but boy did they pay off!
The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup and... by Kate Dicamillo Amazon Price: $7.99
Customer Review: Kate DeCamillo write such wonderful characters! Despereaux, Chiaroscuro, miggery Sow-- all fabulous, even if they happen to be villains. the fact that DiCamillo gives each character's sad backstory makes all of them just that much more believable. What a great fairy tale! Soup for everyone!
Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: I picked up this book back in 3rd grade, and it was the first book that got me in trouble for reading in class. I couldn't put it down. I must have read it once every six months back in elementary school. The story is great, the characters lovable...but the main draw is the ease to identify with the protagonist.
Every kid wants to be, or has felt like, Maniac Magee. I especially recommend this to kids with divorced or deceased parents. When I was little, this book inspired me, and I just know it will inspire generations to come.
Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: This was simply a good read for youth or perhaps for anyone. The story sent out a message concerning discrimination, learning and coping with change, and growing and evolving into a stronger human being. Thumbs up !
What makes it work, though, is that Dr. Seuss understood the importance of breaking the rules - something many of his imitators never grasp. He didn't stick to a rhyme scheme or a meter all the time, he varied it and dropped it when needed. That makes his books readable instead of mind-numbing - even when you're reading them for the 1000th time straight :)
