In 2008, Minnesota recognized its sesquicentennial. Some many, even celebrated. Others did not. In the months leading up to the sesquicentennial, the Minnesota Humanities Center began working with Dakota and Ojibwe people to record stories of how statehood affected their homes, their families, their future. These stories are painfully absent from traditional histories of Minnesota textbooks, and other educational resources. This video is the introduction to a larger series, to be released in chapters throughout the remainder of 2008. To view others, please visit www.minnesotahumanities.org and click on "Special Projects".

Welcome to Media Education Project: Exploring Innovation in the Open Content Movement Media Education Project is a collective and collaborative effort of teachers and researchers; we engage educators in dialogue to translate, exchange, and mobilize knowledge about the critical issues in digital media education so as to promote sets of shared standards and educational outcomes. We also support an active digital citizenship among our participants, and encourage social interactions among various education communities. To support the goals of an equitable information society, we design open educational resources (OERs), which encourage teachers to share and to identify benchmarks and best practices. These resources are shared through our digital learning commons, which we also use to gather data to consider questions of digital accessibility and interoperability and the uses of new media tools in educational spheres. Our passion is for media education. Our digital learning commons welcomes user-generated content. This is a virtual space that promotes interaction and encourages teachers to build community. Log on to mediaeducationproject.ca to see the latest developments. We are constantly changing, constantly growing. And we need your support. Thank you.

Purchase: http://www.der.org/films/joe-leahys-neighbors.html This film is the followup of FIRST CONTACT. It traces the fortunes of Joe Leahy, the mixed-race son of Australian explorer Michael Leahy, in his uneasy relationship with his tribal neighbors. Joe built his coffeeplantation on land bought from the Ganiga in the mid 1970s. European educated, raised in the highlands of Papua, freed by his mixed race from the entanglements of tribal obligation, Joe leads a Western lifestyle governed by individualism and the pursuit of affluence. While Joe may live in Western grandeur, he is still surrounded by his subsistence level Ganiga "neighbors," who never let him forget the original source of his prosperity. Joe spends much of his waking hours just keeping the lid on things. Filmmakers Connolly and Anderson lived for eighteen continuous months on the edge of Joe's plantation, in the "no man's land" between Leahy and the Ganiga. Their lively, non-judgemental narrative eloquently captures the conflicting values of tribalism and capitalism. part of The Highlands Trilogy by Bob Connolly and Robin Anderson distributed by Documentary Educational Resources
