Conquering Lesothos Health-Care Crisis
by rss@youtube.com (BUToday)
3 Oct 2008 at 12:44pm
The tiny country of Lesotho, a small nation surrounded by South Africa, has a population of two million people ? and the third highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the world, at 23.6 percent. Approximately 225,000 people ages 15 to 49 are HIV-positive.
The crisis doesnt end there. Lesothos mountainous terrain limits access to health care. Many patients walk for hours, sometimes an entire day, to reach a hospital or clinic.
And the country has a severe shortage of doctors and nurses (there is only one pediatrician). Lesotho has no medical schools and few nursing schools. Fewer than 20 percent of the students who leave to pursue those careers will return to practice.
But some Boston University faculty and staff members are trying to change that. In 2003, the School of Medicine and the School of Public Health, along with the Lesotho Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, formed the Lesotho-Boston Health Alliance (LeBoHA), which is working to educate and retain physicians and nurses who will then practice in Lesotho.
The alliance is addressing other needs as well, such as hospital and clinic management. If theres no syringe or needle when the nurse goes to give the injection, it really doesnt matter that the nurse is well trained, says LeBoHA program director William Bicknell, a professor and chair emeritus of international health at the School of Public Health and a professor of sociomedical sciences and community medicine at the School of Medicine.
Since the programs inception ? and with funding from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, the International Finance Corporation, the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Dreyfus Health Foundation ? 25 LeBoHA faculty and staff from the School of Management and the MED departments of family medicine, obstetrics, emergency medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics have traveled to Lesotho to work on the project. In addition, 65 SPH and MED students and Boston Medical Center fellows and residents have volunteered in Lesotho for LeBoHA programs or in clinical services at the district hospitals.
Sending first-class people and having the very highest standards and a long-term commitment are what make a difference, says Bicknell, and from that we enrich our teaching and contribute to the knowledge base of how to make health care work in resource-constrained areas everywhere in the world.

General Surgery Summer Program UNIVERSITY BEAT from WUSF 07/28/08
by rss@youtube.com (WUSFChannel)
29 Sep 2008 at 8:29am
The USF Division of General Surgery's Academic Summer Program offers undergraduate students who want to get into medicine a chance to determine if they've got the right stuff for the job. During the intensive three month program, students from around the country (not just USF) shadow USF surgeons while also contributing to presentations and published research - giving them that 'something extra' for their transcripts that medical schools love. University Beat follows this summer's class - the largest group ever - into the lab, their weekly research meeting, and the exam rooms of Tampa General Hospital.

Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RNŽ Examination (Saunders Compre...
by Linda Anne Silvestri
Amazon Price: $44.95
Customer Review: Although I am only halfway through the text, I have found it covers a multitude of topics and is very easy to use. I especially enjoy the accompanying CD which provides questions similar to the ones I experienced in nursing school. As an added benefit, there are a few assessment questions with an audio component that require knowledge from a student's clinical experience. With over twelve hundred pages, it is rather large and time-consuming, and some topics are not discussed in great depth. However, for an outstanding general review this book is well worth the money.
Iconoclast: A Neuroscientist Reveals How to Think Differently
by Gregory Berns
Amazon Price: $19.77
Customer Review:
Iconoclast in the case of the book means One who attacks cherished beliefs. I think most entrepreneurs are good at this. They challenge the known and think creatively.
The following is a summary of Iconoclast from Oct 2008 Fast Company which I think touches most of the salient points:
-- The brain is fundamentally a lazy piece of meat. It doesn't want to waste energy.
-- In order to think creatively, you must develop new neural pathways and break out of the cycle of experience - dependant categorization. As Mark Twain said, "Education consists mainly in what we have unlearned." For most people, this does not come naturally. Often, the harder you think differently, the more rigid the categories become.
-- Fortunately, the networks that govern both perception and imagination can be reprogrammed. By deploying your attention differently, the frontal cortex, which contains rules for decision making, can reconfigure neural networks so that you can see things that you didn't see before. You need a novel stimulus -- either a new piece of information or an unfamiliar environment -- to jolt attentional systems awake. The more radical the change, the greater the likelihood of fresh insights.
-- Only when you consciously confront your brain's shortcuts will you be able to imagine outside of its boundaries.
So I know I want to "break the rules" and be creative. I even know a bit of how to do it like breaking routine and feeding myself knowledge. I think the book should have had more practical tips on how to do that.
I only gave the book 2 stars because it is a tough read. True scientists will like it more than I do.
Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple (Medmaster)

Amazon Price: $29.38
Customer Review: Easy to remember mnemonics and cartoons that you will remember. I only wish I had gotten this book earlier so I had more time to use it before my micro test.
Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, Seventh Edition
by Vinay Kumar, Nelso Fausto, Abul Abbas
Amazon Price: $94.92
Customer Review: the ultimate book of everything you need to know about pathological processes in medicine. way more detail than what is neccesary for any specific class but brings together every discipline to explain disease process.

by Washington University School of Medicine, Daniel H Cooper, Andrew J Krainik, Sam J Lubner, Hilary EL Reno
Amazon Price: $44.95
Customer Review: The Washington Manual is like a mini-DiPiro's. It is especially great because it is small enough to be carried in a backpack without the extra weight. The material inside is not too general yet not too overwhelming. Being a pharmacist that have been out of school for a few years, it is a great review of disease states. The book covers the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy for each disease state.
BRS Physiology (Board Review Series)
by Linda S Costanzo
Amazon Price: $35.05
Customer Review: I would just like to say that this sender wasted no time and I received the book promplty within the week that i ordered it. Also, the book was just as they promised it would be. Thank you very much. I have asked and paid extra for items to be expedited before and they still took forever.
For those who are wondering if the BRS Physiology book is worth it: IT DEFINITELY IS!!! I am very happy that I purchased it and know that I will be using it for decades... yes I said decades.
Examkrackers Mcat Complete Study Package (Examkrackers)
by Jonathan Orsay
Amazon Price: $110.22
Customer Review: My score: 34M
BS: EXCELLENT review for science majors (non-science majors may need more background knowledge). The book is very clear on what should and should not be studied. My practice scores jumped from 10-13/14 after studying this material. Unfortunately, I choked in this section slightly on the real MCATs and that kept me from a score of 36 or 37.
VR: Decent strategies that made sense and worked for me. On average the practice and the tips upped me from 10 to 11 in this section.
PS: GOOD review for physical sciences. The equations they suggest you know are right on point. After working through this review section and memorizing the recommended equations, my score improved from 10 to 12.
Writing: This was not covered extensively and it need not be. My score is rather low, but as long as it's not J or K (two lowest), you should be fine. I scored rather low here more because I took the section lightly than because of the prep materials.
Overall... a solid review package at a reasonable price for science majors. More help with understanding may be necessary for people who have not taken college Physics, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, etc.
---
My recipe for the MCATs: Examkrackers Comprehensive study package, electronic flash cards (that I purchased), ALL the practice AAMC exams available, a few other simulated exams from other test prep companies (hand-me-down books), and STUDY, PRACTICE, and PERSISTENCE.
P.S. I was a bit worried about Examkrackers posting their own reviews of their product (since they have SO many more reviews than other test-prep books), but I assure you I am a real pre-med. Just check my profile to see my other purchases!
Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating

Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR) 2009-2010: The Most Authoritativ...
by Association of American Medical Colleges Staff
Amazon Price: $24.50
Customer Review: A necessity for any pre-med. Most colleges have their own, but I wanted a personal copy... Breaks down school by school what is needed to apply and gives a little bit about the school atmosphere and program type. Also gives degree types that are available. Extremely helpful!!! Very reasonably priced, item arrived in excellent condition.
Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry (Lippincott's Illustrated Revi...
by Pamela C Champe, Richard A Harvey, Denise R Ferrier
Amazon Price: $49.45
Customer Review: Attributes:
1. Wonderfully written in a lucid and point-of-fact manner w/minimal fluff.
2. The correlations are clearly laid out and a must for sensing the overall picture.
3. Fantastic diagrams and there are plenty of them.
4. Entire text is also accessible online which is very important for me because I can cut and paste the stuff and further abridge the contents of the book.
5. Easily readable from cover to cover.....and doing so multiple times is a really good way to encompass the entire width of the subject.
6. Very succinct chapter reviews at the end of each chapter which would satisfy the USMLE Step 1 needs I would think.
I for one am using this for my med-school biochem class and it is a veritable feast of biochem knowledge w/o being mentally bludgeoned by our prescribed text at AUC which is Lehninger.
I only wish the authors were able to write an entire textbook. A bridge between Lehninger and this guide. I for one would buy it in a heart-beat.
Thank you Dr's. Harvey, Champe and Ferrier...a superb and well executed effort.
