Witty Owl
by rss@youtube.com (wittytheowl)
9 Oct 2008 at 9:19am

Future Generations was founded in the 1980's with one and only one purpose in mind. To fight truancy, dropouts, and illiteracy in our school systems. Our president and founder, Ray Nevarez, realized that too many students were dropping out of school and almost nothing was done about it. When elections come about, almost all politicians have an agenda for our schools but we all know that too many things are said just to receive our vote. Mr. Ray Nevarez realized to his surprise that this great country never had a national education mascot that will encourage students to stay in school so that they can succeed in life. He took on the task of creating a private enterprise not funded by the government and named it Future Generations. This was followed by his creation of Witty Owl to help encourage students as our country first national education mascot, role model, and spokesperson. Witty's task is huge and costly. However, Mr. Ray Nevarez feels that with the right and genuine support of our citizens, he will take his concept to the next level, which is world wide. I urge you to support Witty Owl so that he can speak for our students so that not so many wind up in a road to nowhere. Thank you

Recovery Psychology
by rss@youtube.com (recoverypsychologist)
2 Oct 2008 at 10:12pm

Recovery differs from the concept of remission. Clinical or Abnormal Psychology is focused on remission. The President's Commission on Mental Health Action Agenda states that there needs to be a national education campaign to transform the mental health care system to a recovery orientation. Recovery Psychology asks what is an academic discipline, what is a behavior science, what is an education? What would happen if persons who have been diagnosed with psychological disorders should look at the textbooks that declare them abnormal and do not teach recovery? What would they say about the science of psychology? Is the modern Abnormal or Clinical Psychology textbook any different from racist charictures in cartoons and television shows of the past?

And the Singapore flag should be flying at half mast during this period! Since PAP will not give him such a befitting farewell, I will! Virtually. If you agree with me on this, I urge you to embed this video in your blog or post it on your favourite forum, as a show of support for Mr. Jeyaretnam and what he stood for. Credit: The half-mast Singapore flag is from: http://wayangparty.wordpress.com/2008/10/01/lets-fly-the-singapore-flag-at-half-past-as-a-show-of-respect-for-our-lau-hero-jbj/ Note: This is part 2 of my tributes to Mr. Jeyaretnam. This is an educational orientation video, aimed at introducing Singapore to new foreign students studying in Singapore and pupils holding Singapore permanent resident (SPR) cards in primary schools, secondary schools (including the Independent Schools (IS) and those in the Integrated Programme (IP)), junior colleges (JC) and the polytechnics. It is especially recommended for viewing after the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), or the two Semestral Assessments (SA1 and SA2), or the two Continual Assessments (CA1 and CA2), where there are ample time for some Civics and Moral Education (CME). The importance of National Education (NE) cannot be overemphasized, as the Ministry of Education (MOE) has emphasized many times. Students of the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU) should also view this video, especially if they are under various MOE or Public Service Comission (PSC) scholarships or the edusave scheme. Foreign Talents (FT) and other not-so-talented foreigners working at Fusionpolis, Biopolis and the other "polis" of various A*STAR organisations may be interested to infuse themselves with some knowledge of Singapore too. The Praxis Series Official Guide (Official Guide to the Praxis)
by Educational Testing Service
Amazon Price: $14.93
Customer Review: I am very pleased with the amount of time I waited to receive this item. It was shipped quickly and I received it within a few days of making the purchase.

How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience, and School: Expanded Edition
by Committee on Developments in the Science of Learning with additional material from the Committee on Learning Research and Educational Practice, National Research Council
Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: This is a nice book on the important topics related to how people learn. It serves as an introductory text from which you can gather relevant references on the issues that are of the most interest to you.

The copy I bought at Amazon was defective, though. It was missing more than 20 pages!! But after I contacted the publisher, they quickly sent me a replacement book with no charge at all. (I did not try to contact Amazon for fear that the whole Amazon stock is defective in the same way.)

Personal Space Camp (Children's/Life Skills)
by Julia Cook
Amazon Price: $9.95
Customer Review: I use this book as a teaching tool in social groups to talk about personal space and respecting others space. The book gives great examples of what is personal space when sitting, standing, waiting in line, etc. I love the humor used by the author to help kids understand that not everyone gets it at first about space. The main character finally gets it at the end about his relationship to others and that he wasn't attending a planetary space camp! Great story!

Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs (N.A.E.Y.C. ...
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: I recommend that customers take caution when ordering from this seller. I tried to contact the seller concerning the shipment of my book and never received a response, ultimately I asked for a refund from amazon.

by Sharon Weiner Green M.A., Ira K. Wolf Ph.D.
Amazon Price: $11.55

CliffsTestPrep Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching (CliffsTestPrep)
by Diane E. Kern
Amazon Price: $17.81
Customer Review: I was very disappointed with this book after reading the online reviews. Right from the introduction, the book refers to "Chapters" that are not in the book or are un-referenced, making,in my opinion, most of the book unusable. "For a preview of a case history/constructed response question, turn to Chapter 5. For a preview of the multiple choice questions, turn to Chapter 6." Chapter 5 and 6 of what? There ARE no chapters in this book! What is she talking about here??? Seems like a PhD author would know at least the basics of how to treat chapter references.

CliffsTestPrep Praxis II: English Subject Area Assessments (0041, 0042, 0043,...
by Diane E. Kern
Amazon Price: $14.95
Customer Review: I used this book to study for the Middle School English Test(0049). I found it to be helpful in most aspects but on a test like this the book can not possibly cover every single aspect. It does cover a great portion and I would recomend this book to anyone who needs a study guide fast. (I only prepared for the test for about a week and a half.)

The Geography Bee Complete Preparation Handbook: 1,001 Questions & Answers to...
by Matthew T. Rosenberg, Jennifer E. Rosenberg, Michael Knight
Amazon Price: $12.89
Customer Review: Again, my 6 year old picks it up and we play quiz games with each other.

Praxis I: PPST (Cliffs Test Prep)
by Jerry, Ph.D. Bobrow
Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: I just passed all 3 praxis exams on the first try. This was the only test prep book I used for the reading and writing test. I felt this book did not review the math section well enough. I used another math review book and I still felt I didn't get enough of a math review. The math section of the test was much harder than I was expecting. However, this books is great. The practice tests are very helpful and I would recommend this book to anyone who is planning on taking the praxis ppst.

RTI Toolkit: A Practical Guide for Schools
by Jim Wright
Amazon Price: $22.77
Customer Review: This book is great if the RTI process is relatively new to you or your building. It discusses why and how to establish an RTI team to help recommend interventions to your staff. The only real problem is that many of the interventions it lists aren't really interventions, but teaching strategies which would be Tier 1 interventions. Most schools need help finding Tier 2 interventions.
