Customer Review: I've read many young adult novels and a few vampire novels before reading Twilight. The hype around this book was crazy, and with a movie coming out, I was excited to read this book. Unfortunately, I was not impressed.
The book was entertaining, but nothing more than that. Maybe if I was in high school, I would have enjoyed it more. What I didn't like: the message, the characters, and the relationship.
Like another review wrote, the message is really bad for girls. A pretty girl meets a pretty boy, and life is meaningless without him. I've read so many young adult books for girls that is empowering towards women. It's another Cinderella story of a beautiful girl devoted to a beautiful boy. Shallow.
Bella Swann comes off as any pretty, a little socially awkward, clumsy high school girl. This is realistic. However, if you're going to make a perfect vampire fall in love with a human for the first time, shouldn't she be a little more interesting? A little more wise? A little more dark? I don't know, but she is lacking. And Edward is perfect and cocky. BO-RING!
And their relationship. She smells good. He looks good. They have a few conversations. It really seems like she fell in love with his good looks. Why do I think that? Because he has no personality.
I'm still going to the rest of the series, but my standards won't be as high.

Customer Review: I read this book to do a critical analysis test in my Gender and Politics course. I went in to Barnes & Noble with a list of possible selections, and I just bought the first book I came across. Oops.
From the first sentence of the first chapter, in which she boastfully restates her own definition of feminism from a previous book, this book drips with pretension and self-importance. She never fails to mention moments in her own past when she felt slighted, or allude to her opinions in past books and cite them as facts now. Throughout the book, the author uses terms such as "we" or "us" when referring to feminists, rather than writing objectively about feminist goals.
The quality of the writing is pretty poor, as well. She often switches between the present and preterit, making her already-meandering flow of biases even more difficult to follow. She refers not to "the feminist movement," but to "feminist movement," as if it was singular, not a series of separate and independent movements. However, she doesn't capitalize it like the proper noun it apparently is, as if to say that "feminist movement" is almost as cool as her since she doesn't capitalize her name, but not quite. She starts sentences with "and," while leaving commas out between quotations.
Maybe her ability was "constantly questioned" at Stanford because of her absurd love of alliteration in prose. Phrases like, "... particularly previously disenfranchised privileged ...," and, "... critical consciousness must be continuous," made me sick. It's like she feels that nobody will pay attention if she speaks like a normal human being.
The entire book seemed to me like she was saying, "I know more about feminism than you because I know more about feminism than you." Her so-called "facts" are often without sources; or if there are sources cited, they are usually personal anecdotes or allusions to her previous books. Does she really believe that saying something twice makes it truer?
The author also assumes that, apparently, as a reader, I'm too stupid to understand something that's obvious unless she herself tells me that it is clear. I really can't believe that such a magnitude of snobbishness, arrogance and self-absorption is healthy.
Summarily, Feminism is for Everybody is easily the worst book I have read in a long, long time. It's no surprise that "disappointing" is one of the suggested tags for this book.

Customer Review: I had the chance to meet the author during a conference to review this book and his work. I was looking forward to hearing about his approach for improving relationships between races. What a disappointment, we could even make it to the stage of having a trusting conversation. I felt my religious beliefs were under attack and he was not open to an honest and complete conversation.
Gary Howard is not the spokes person for white males ... nor is he the spoke person for improving cultural relationships. He speaks for promoting himself and making money.... any another false prophet making a profit.

Customer Review: I too found the first half of the book fascinating and learned something new every couple of pages. Around the middle of the book when he talks about discipline things bog down - it's more anecdotal and opinionated and less scientifically based. The last few chapters again piqued my interest. Interesting statistics and nuggets of information are studded throughout the book and it is well worth reading for anyone interested in how best to educate children to become productive adults.
Some reviewers disagreed with Sax's assertion that all children are "gifted" but I think he uses that term to mean that all children have some talent or ability or interest which can be developed into a "gift" with appropriate teaching. His book explores how best to do this, backed up by scientific evidence based on recent advances in brain imaging. I also recommend BOYS ADRIFT.

Customer Review: In an age which sees sex as an idol rather than an icon it is a welcome alternative to see human sexuality presented as what God intended it to be. It presents Pope John Paul II's "Theology of the Body" in a very positive and holistic way that teenagers can readily understand. Furthermore, this book contains good resources for the classroom or youth groups as it contains teaching strategies, stories, testimonies, group activities, questions for discussion, etc.
