Customer Review: This one was just okay for me.
My only real probelm with it is that it was kind of slow. I kept waiting for things to pick up, but it didn't really happen. There was a little bit of action, but it wasn't as exciting as I expected.
There were good things about it too. Libba Bray's writing is great. Her descriptions make things so easy to visualize, and the concept is fantastic. The Realms, the magical place Gemma and her friends discover, are amazing. This book has the potential to be a great story; it just doesn't quite make it. However, it is good, and it's worth the time and money.
I would also like to say that this is the first in a trilogy, and the second one is great and much more action-packed. You will need to read this one so that you understand what's going on in the next two books. This one is kind of slow, but it has to give you the "background" parts. I would recommend this one so that you can get to the others.

She knew nothing really about emergency and disaster relief--she is a hairdresser by trade. But she had a generous and brave spirit. When all the doctors and nurses had gone, she stayed behind to to build a beauty school and salon (something the Taliban had outlawed). She encountered the Taliban, women in arranged marriages, bombings, cultural divides--and all with great humor and grace. This was not only enlightening, but fun to read.

Customer Review: The Miss Julia series has been so great for me. Ordinarily I'm not a reader but I got hooked on the Miss Julia books and can't get enough of them. The "School of Beauty" did not disappoint me. Ann B. Ross is a great Author and has created some awesome characters. I love all of them and you get so drawn in to each character you keep wanting more more more.

Customer Review: Volume 5 of "High School Debut" starts off when a new girl, Leona, transfers to Haruna's class. She stares Haruna down and follows her around everywhere. It's obvious to everyone that Leona's got it in for her. Well, obvious to everyone except Haruna, who thinks Leona's a fan until she declares her true intentions.
I liked this part. Leona is a great character. She's intense to the point of being obsessive, but she's kind of clueless. She comes up with what has got to be the most ill-conceived revenge plot in the history of shojo manga. Leona was funny, and I hope to see more of her. Also, Haruna and Yoh's interactions are great during this part, especially with Haruna's off the wall fantasies.
In the next part of the manga, Haruna worries that Mami might feel awkward hanging out with her and Yoh, so she decides to set her up with Asaoka. This doesn't go as well as planned, though, and Yoh gets mad when Haruna praises Asaoka too much. To help Haruna, Asaoka invites Haruna on a fake date to make Yoh jealous enough to apologize.
This is Haruna and Yoh's first real fight, and the differences in their personalities really stand out. Haruna's very energetic and outspoken, while Yoh is reserved and shy. His embarrassed reactions can be really funny. Also, Asaoka gets a lot of attention in this volume, which is great. He actually shows signs that he might actually like Haruna... but that's for a later volume!

He cut about 2 inches off of one little girl's long blond hair and a big chunk out of his own. I won't read it again to my kinders.

Customer Review: In volume 2 of "High School Debut," Haruna realized that she liked Yoh. Now she wants to tell him, but she's not sure she should. After all, he did tell her not to fall for him. Haruna is afraid that Yoh will find out (since she's so transparent),that she starts avoiding Yoh, and freaking out when she does see him. Would telling him ruin the relationship she already has with him? Can she risk it?
With most shojo manga, the confession is the climax of the series. Not so with "High School Debut." And I really admire that about the series. It doesn't waste time with a lot of drama that keeps the couple apart. Instead, it focuses on the relationship. And this manga also deals with some very real problems that couples go through. In this volume, we see the difference in Haruna and Yoh's maturity- they go on a "date" to the beach, but Haruna plays the whole time. She realizes that she doesn't really know how to be a girlfriend. I thought this was refreshingly new and realistic subject matter.
Volume 3 is where "High School Debut" really swings into action. If you've read the first two volumes, it's definitely worth it.

Customer Review: Yes! I've waited for this one for a while. I got to read some synopsis of the story, so I'm ahead a little. But it continues being a really great read and I am anticipating the next book every time one is published. This book deals with the lovely hurdle of a first kiss, and all the crazy emotions, rather litteraly in our heroine's case, that come with it.
Super cute, rather exagerated, and just a lot of fun. No cliffhanger to be afraid of, so it's a well rounded volume. I can't wait for the rest of the series to continue! Very satisfactory.
