In a startling mix of information, photographs and personal accounts, the book describes hazing as an ancient practice that has endured and become increasingly deadly. Hazing encompasses more than binge drinking and paddling; it spans all ages, and stems from the need to control others and the need to be accepted. Hazing can begin as early as grammar school, and has been documented in the military, in secret societies, in gangs, on sports teams, and even in some professions. Some of the violations committed include performing sex acts, shoplifting, paddling, alcohol abuse, sleep deprivation, and confinement.

Nuwer's description of hazing is shocking and disturbing, as it should be. High School Hazing will enlighten and inform readers about this phenomenon. One area of the book that could be stronger is the conclusion, which provides preliminary suggestions on how to stop hazing. The points serve more as "things to keep in mind," or as warning signs to identify hazing, but much more description and guidance is needed before a participant could successfully stop a hazing ritual or organization.

This book would be an important addition to both school and public libraries. This is an imperative piece of knowledge young adults should be exposed to as soon as possible.

How to Survive High School would have been interesting if survival were used as a metaphor throughout the book, but it is not. It addresses teenagers but does so at an extremely naïve level. Most teens are too savvy for this material to be entertained or captivated by the advice extended.

Advice like, go to assemblies and pay attention, has no hope of achieving the desired results. Anecdotal information is taken from actual teen interviews but there are no fresh insights, no real-world tales to fan the flames of teen imagination.

Material in this book is not well organized. Although there is a decent index, a search for raising your grades came up empty. I knew there was a page that I had flagged on the topic of low grades and was surprised to see it was not in the index. But then, like a lot of the material in the book, the advice given was paper-thin. Low grades? Work harder!

I doubt that teens can suffer through insights like "Do not be surprised if starting high school causes stress." I would not recommend this book to anyone expecting a true survival guide. On the up side it does contain a collection of concerns that might help a parent trying to organize his/her thoughts about what their teens may need to deal with. No teen that I know, however, would be willing or patient enough to read this book cover to cover.

The author, a teacher at Lane through the 60's, chronicles the events that led to decent people vacating the neighborhood, rioting, looting, assaults on teachers including setting one on fire after shooting flammable fluids on him, that otherwise put one more coffin into East New York. Surprisingly enough, a colation of 'social activists' 'black panthers', a 'corrupt mayoralty' and a zoning irregularity resulted in the destruction of a school that was already desegregated proir to Court decisions mandating busing and desegregation. Author Saltzman is also honest as he too, at the time anyway, supported integration if same was done properly. Therefore I believe his book deserves extra credence.

The book is problematic because it is not chronological and refers to the same event by different nicknames. Some chapters appear to go over the same set of events from different perspectives, but this takes place throughout the book making the entire picture somewhat difficult to grasp.

What you do get with this book is an honest man's grounded view of school beaurocracy, police, the mayor, the teacher's unions, and various revolutionary groups who were laughing all the way. You get gems of urban history that the useless teacher's unions forget to mention when they hail the education revolution of the 60's, like the fact that Lane High School's rifle team stopped race rioting Lane students from destroying and looting Cypress Hills by firing their rifles at them. When do hear that repeated by . . . .

As always, real history is stranger than fiction, and any urban historian or honest cultural critic should have this book...
