Alain Badiou European Graduate School 2008 7

http://www.egs.edu/ Alain Badiou speaking about love. Public open video lecture for the faculty and students of the European Graduate School, Media Studies Department Program, EGS, Saas-Fee, Switzerland, Europe, 2008. Alain Badiou. Alain Badiou, born 1937, in Rabat, Morocco is a prominent French Left-wing philosopher. Alain Badiou, Ph.D, Rene Descartes Chair at EGS, was a student at the école Normale Supérieure in the 1950s. He taught at the University of Paris VIII (Vincennes-Saint Denis) from 1969 until 1999, when he returned to ENS as the Chair of the philosophy department. He continues to teach a popular seminar at the Collège International de Philosophie, on topics ranging from the great antiphilosophers Saint-Paul,Paul the Apostle, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Jacques Lacan to the major conceptual innovations of the twentieth century. Much of Badiou's life has been shaped by his dedication to the consequences of the May 1968 revolt in Paris. Long a leading member of Union des jeunesses communistes de France (marxistes-léninistes), he remains with Sylvain Lazarus and Natacha Michel at the centre of L'Organisation Politique, an organization concerned with direct popular intervention in a wide range of issues including immigration, labor, and housing. Alain Badiou is the author of several successful novels and plays as well as more than a dozen philosophical works including: Philosophy, Le concept de modèle 1969, Théorie du sujet 1982, Peut-on penser la politique? Badiou wrote several dramas and critical or political essays including Rhapsodie pour le théâtre 1990, Beckett, l'increvable désir 1995, Le Siècle 2005; Literature and drama: Almagestes 1964, Portulans 1967, L'Écharpe rouge 1979, Ahmed le subtil 1994, Ahmed Philosophe, followed by Ahmed se fâche 1995, Les Citrouilles, a comedy 1996, Calme bloc ici-bas 1997; Political essays: Théorie de la contradiction 1975, De l'idéologie, with F. Customer Review: Item arrived within timely manner and in exceptional condition. Would definitely do business with again.

Kaplan GMAT Premier Program, 2009 (Book & CD-ROM)
by Kaplan
Amazon Price: $27.72
Customer Review: I'd like to underscore the comments of others regarding the numerous typos and overall sloppy editing of both the book and CD. It's one thing to have some typos, but it's another thing to have information missing from graphs and completely garbled reading comprehension passages. That some of this information was intended to be there is usually made obvious by the explanations. This will prove frustrating if you're trying to get an accurate gauge of where you stand, especially with the computer based testing. (i.e. If you get wrong answers because information was missing or mistyped, you are still wrong and get different questions than you would have otherwise.)

Given the above disclaimer, I did find the test taking strategies and advice useful. Moreover, the explanations for the answers are helpful when you legitimately got the questions wrong.

Truth be told, the strategy and explanations make this guide useful, but that's only because of the dearth of better products. So, while shoddily executed, the book is a useful, if frustrating, second source.

Barron's GRE: Graduate Record Examination
by Sharon Weiner Green, Ira K. Wolf
Amazon Price: $23.09
Customer Review: I thought maybe I should borrow this newer version of the Barron's GRE from the library and see if there's a big difference between this and the 2006-2007 one. I was disappointed that all the materials including the practice exams were the same. I would not bother to get a newer version if you already have the 2006-2007.

The PowerScore LSAT Logical Reasoning Bible: A Comprehensive System for Attac...
by David M. Killoran
Amazon Price: $64.99
Customer Review: This book is very good and is very detailed on every type of question. Plus you can actually remember what you are suppose to do on each type. The only down side is that it's very long. But if you want to do your best on the LSAT, you should read this book. Give yourself a month on this book alone.

Notice that the conditional reasoning, formal logic, and parallel reasoning sections are probably the most helpful sections. However, these questions are by far the hardest on the logical reasoning section. I recommend saving them for last to make sure you get done in time, since they are the most time consuming. (Before I read these sections I incorrectly thought conditional and logical reasoning was far to easy to be worth studying, since I had an engineering background.)

In short, I recommend the following study method for the LSAT:

Introduction to the test: Look at the free stuff from LSAC

Logic Games: Read the book "Ace the LSAT Logic Games", by Get Prepped.

Logical Reasoning: read the book "LSAT Logical Reasoning Bible", by Power Score.

Reading Comprehension: don't read any books that tell you to highlight and underline stuff, you won't have time to finish the exam. Instead, read a bunch of novels to improve your reading skills if you were never much of a reader before. So ladies, read some romance novels, and guys well you know what to read.

Kaplan/Princeton Review: I don't recommend wasting any time with either of these books. They are much too basic. If you want to study for a couple weeks and just get familiar with the test, then these are fine. However, you won't do your best if you rely simply on these general books.

Lastly, make sure to put down all study books the entire week before the test and simply do practice exams.

Examkrackers Mcat Complete Study Package (Examkrackers)
by Jonathan Orsay
Amazon Price: $110.22
Customer Review: My score: 34M

BS: EXCELLENT review for science majors (non-science majors may need more background knowledge). The book is very clear on what should and should not be studied. My practice scores jumped from 10-13/14 after studying this material. Unfortunately, I choked in this section slightly on the real MCATs and that kept me from a score of 36 or 37.

VR: Decent strategies that made sense and worked for me. On average the practice and the tips upped me from 10 to 11 in this section.

PS: GOOD review for physical sciences. The equations they suggest you know are right on point. After working through this review section and memorizing the recommended equations, my score improved from 10 to 12.

Writing: This was not covered extensively and it need not be. My score is rather low, but as long as it's not J or K (two lowest), you should be fine. I scored rather low here more because I took the section lightly than because of the prep materials.

Overall... a solid review package at a reasonable price for science majors. More help with understanding may be necessary for people who have not taken college Physics, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, etc.

---

My recipe for the MCATs: Examkrackers Comprehensive study package, electronic flash cards (that I purchased), ALL the practice AAMC exams available, a few other simulated exams from other test prep companies (hand-me-down books), and STUDY, PRACTICE, and PERSISTENCE.

P.S. I was a bit worried about Examkrackers posting their own reviews of their product (since they have SO many more reviews than other test-prep books), but I assure you I am a real pre-med. Just check my profile to see my other purchases!

Amazon Price: $24.50
Customer Review: A necessity for any pre-med. Most colleges have their own, but I wanted a personal copy... Breaks down school by school what is needed to apply and gives a little bit about the school atmosphere and program type. Also gives degree types that are available. Extremely helpful!!! Very reasonably priced, item arrived in excellent condition.
