high school baseball Books
Painting the Black (Avon Camelot Books)
by Carl Deuker
Amazon Price: $5.99
Customer Review: Ryan is in the summer before his senior year in high school, and he still feels like he was just visiting school this whole time. He never joined a team or organization, does okay but not great in his classes, and isn't sure where his life is going. When he was younger he used to love baseball and he was really good at it, but when he was twelve he fell out of a tree and broke several bones, including his ankle, which never quite healed right. Since then he hasn't played baseball.
One day in the middle of the summer a new family moves in across the street. There is a guy Ryan's age named Josh, who is a real athletic superstar. He and Ryan become friends, and Josh convinces him that he would make a great baseball catcher. Josh tells him that teams always need catchers, because it's not a job with much glory and not many guys want to do it. Ryan gradually regains his love for the game of baseball and is eager to play again. He is thrilled with his new friend, whom he admires a great deal.
At school, though, Ryan doesn't feel like he really fits in with Josh. Josh is always in the spotlight and he thrives on it. Furthermore, he often acts like a dumb jock, harassing girls and being loud and boisterous with his athlete friends. When both Josh and Ryan make the baseball team, though, things are at least good between them on the field. That is, until a confrontation between Josh and a female classmate puts Ryan in a bad position.
I liked reading about baseball from a catcher's point of view. The author did a good job of explaining why it was such a good position to play. I liked Ryan's grandfather and the quiet way he affected Ryan's life. I also liked how Ryan took control of his life when Josh's focus shifted.
Josh's character was obviously trouble, though, and Ryan knew it from the start of school. I didn't understand why Ryan continued to be loyal to him for so long after he saw what a jerk Josh was.
High Heat

Customer Review: High Heat
By: Carl Dueker
It all started when sixteen-year-old Shane Hunter's dad was caught in a drug deal. Shane had it all, big house, a lot of friends, the richest school in his area, and the best baseball team in the state. But then, something happens causing him to lose all of that and even make him quit the one thing that he loves and has never ever thought about quitting before.
What I liked about this book was that as soon as I picked it up I could instantly connect to Shane. Anyone who is a true baseball fan can connect to this book. Carl Dueker does an amazing job drawing the reader into the book. I read the first couple pages and I couldn't put the book down. Every minute there was a different scene shocking me. It kept me guessing and I think that's the kind of book that every reader wants to read.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is a baseball fanatic, and anyone who has had something going great and everything going their way, when boom it all just goes down the drain.

Student Athlete Handbook for the 21st Century: A guide to recruiting, scholar...
by Christine Grimes
Amazon Price: $13.45
Customer Review: This book was great. It had all the information in one place and was a quick, accessible read. It filled in the gaps in my knowledge about how my kid should approach coaches and how we should make a good media guide and video, and it gave me tips from an insider perspective. It even gives examples of professional sample letters for students to submit to prospective coaches. It's also a book that could help the whole team (we found lots of info to share and pass on) and something our busy kids would still sit down and read (and I can't imagine my son plunking down with one of those huge books and doing that). This book had everything I needed to know in one place. I could have googled for weeks for information and still not found everything in this book (I tried!). The price was right and I checked it out ahead of time with the search inside to get a feel for what it was like. It provided everything it promised.
Coach's Guide to Game-Winning Softball Drills
by Michele Smith, Lawrence Hsieh
Amazon Price: $11.53
Customer Review: As a league administrator, I'm always looking for great coaching
resources for the coaches in our league. I love this book because it's
a combination coaching and drills book. Many drills books out there
just have drills (with a smattering of ad hoc remarks on mechanics).
But this book is different. Every section of the book has a thorough
discussion of the required mechanics (hitting, pitching, defensive
footwork, infield defense, outfield defense, etc.), followed by a slew
of drills. The book contains a progression of drills for every level of
player (youth league level, as well as tons of "advanced variation"
drills for travel league and high school players). The book is very
organized, and therefore is a great resource for coaches to refer back
to on a regular basis. You can tell that Michele Smith is a stickler
for details because the photos and captions are very detail oriented and
helpful. All and all a fantastic resource!
Senior Year: A Father, A Son, and High School Baseball
by Dan Shaughnessy
Amazon Price: $11.16
Customer Review: The customer reviews for this book are highly polarized -- mainly 1 star or 5 stars.
I came with no strong preconceptions about Dan Shaughnessy. I live in the Boston area, so I have read many of his columns in the Globe over the years. But I don't have a strong opinion of him. I neither love him nor hate him.
That's also the way I felt about this book. I didn't love it or hate it.
I found the book easy to read and sped quickly through it. As the story progressed, I was eager to see how things would unfold for Sam Shaughnessy and his family. I laughed at many of Shaughnessy's anecdotes and observations about the politically correct culture of Newton, Massachusetts. I believe the book accurately describes much of the challenges and excitement of a budding Division I athlete navigating through his senior year in high school.
My main criticism of the book is that the feel-good, family-first tone felt a little forced. I guess the prominently placed blurb by Mitch Albom on the cover should have clued me in to the homilies to follow.
The way Mr. Shaughnessy describes his home, it is the epitome of all that's good about America. It seems that all the kids in Newton feel comfortable stopping by, sharing a meal, and sleeping over. The Shaughnessy home is always messy, noisy, vibrant, and happily chaotic. There don't seem to be any temper tantrums, slammed doors, or brooding silences. Also, the Shaughnessys seem to treat all their neighbors as part of the extended family. There are no meddling, nosy neighbors, no weirdos that the family studiously avoids. Despite Mr. Shaughnessy's busy work and travel schedule, he seems never to miss an important family moment.
Maybe Mr. Shaughnessy's family life really is that good. Or perhaps he feels guilty about having missed so much of his life at home over the years and is applying a revisionist tone to his description of his family life. I guess readers are supposed to be inspired by the family values that Dan Shaughnessy and his family seemingly epitomize. But I think many readers, like me, will doubt whether things are really that good in the Shaughnessy home.
Nonetheless, I did enjoy reading this book. With the reservations above, I still recommend it.
Pitch Like a Pro: A guide for Young Pitchers and their Coaches, Little League...
by Jim Rosenthal, Leo Mazzone
Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: Pitching Like a Pro offers a comprehensive outline of what it takes to be a successful pitcher with longevity, whether at a professional level or starting out as a child (or anywhere in-between). Leo Mazzone was a pitching coach for the Atlanta Braves during their many successive years of making the playoffs as a result of one of the best pitching staffs in major league history; thus the information provided comes from a very qualified source.
The book covers Throwing Programs, which outlines the workout and training regimens enacted by the Braves pitching staff. It also covers how to grip the ball for all the basic pitches, a full chapter on mechanics, another on tactics, full descriptions on how to field at the pitching position, and finally physical conditioning.
Overall this book is as fine a foundation as one will find on becoming an effective pitcher and having a long lasting career without injury. I recommend this book to anyone seeking to improve their pitching performance and avoid injury.
Pitchers' Duel (Chip Hilton Sports Series)
by Clair Bee, Cynthia Bee Farley, Randall K. Farley
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: My book is called Pitchers Duel by Coach Clair Bee. This book is about an high school all star player who learns that there are bullies who can bring people down. There were bullies that didn't like the coach and wanted to suspend Chip to make their team lose state. The bullies poured things on the coach who is Rockwell and Chip wanted to save him, so he got into a fight and got suspended. Then once the suspension was over, the bullies had to think of another plan to set on Chip. So they forged Chip's contract that he got to prevent him to play in the playoffs. Chip went to the police to prove that he didn't sign it. Finally, he came back in the championship game to play the 10th inning through the 19th. They lost that game and then Rockwell retired.
There are a lot of reasons why someone else should read this book. One reason is that this story teaches you how to prevent bullies. Another reason why someone else should read this book is that there are a lot of different series about Chip Hilton. The last reason why someone else should read this book is that you can learn about all different sports like baseball football and basketball. Some people that might want to read this book are people who like baseball. Other people are maybe people who love reading sports books. Finally, people who would want to read this book are " all about sports ". This was one of my favorite books i have ever read.
Out of Order (Bccb Blue Ribbon Fiction Books (Awards))
by A. M. Jenkins
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: I think that this book was really very good. The characters kept me interested in reading more because they didn't seem fictional at all. I'm not much of a reader, but I read this book so fast because I could relate to almost everything that was going on. Understanding what the characters actions is so easy because you can see exactly what they are going through.
