Rob Brown - Interview - The Express ("...what would Ernie do?")
by rss@youtube.com (blacktreemedia)
9 Oct 2008 at 3:50am
In America in the late 1950s and early 60s, one young man became a symbol for a country grappling to move past its long-held views of people of color. His unprecedented journey unfolded as he shattered not only sports records, but also perceptions of what was possible for an African-American at the time. His name was Ernie Davis, but fans knew him better as The Elmira Express.
This film is a tribute to his courage.
Based on a true story, The Express follows the extraordinary life of college football hero Ernie Davis (ROB BROWN of Finding Forrester, Coach Carter). His quiet fight for equality and respect forever changed the face of the game, and his civil rights story continues to inspire new generations.
Born in 1939 and raised in poverty in Pennsylvania coal-mining country by his grandmother and grandfather (CHARLES S. DUTTON of Secret Window, Gothika), before moving to Elmira, New York, Davis hurdled social and economic obstacles to become one of the greatest running backs in college football history. Under the guidance of legendary Syracuse coach Ben Schwartzwalder (DENNIS QUAID of The Rookie, Any Given Sunday), he became a hero who surpassed Jim Browns achievements and became the first African-American player to be awarded the Heisman Trophy, college footballs highest individual honor.
ROB BROWN (Ernie Davis) received critical acclaim in his feature-film debut as Jamal Wallace in the Gus Van Sant film Finding Forrester. A natural-born talent, who had never studied nor had any professional acting experience, he was awarded the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award for Best Male Newcomer in 2000, as well as the Golden Satellite Award for Outstanding New Talent for his performance opposite Sean Connery, the Oscar®-winning actress Anna Paquin and F. Murray Abraham.
Brown was last seen in Kimberly Peirces Stop-Loss, a drama about a young soldier who returns to his hometown in Texas from the war in Iraq, only to be recalled by the governments stop-loss policy. This Scott Rudin film stars several talented young actors alongside Brown, including Channing Tatum, Ryan Phillippe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
In 2005, Brown starred opposite Alexis Bledel and Chris Evans in the gritty independent film The Orphan King, directed by Andrew Wilder. Later that same year, Brown appeared alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Ashanti in Paramount Pictures Coach Carter. In this story of a controversial high-school basketball coach (Jackson) who benches his undefeated team due to poor grades, Brown plays a key member of the team who becomes involved with a female classmate (Ashanti).
Brown also appeared in New Line Cinemas Take the Lead, co-starring Antonio Banderas and Alfre Woodard, and directed by Liz Friedlander. This true story is about a former professional ballroom dancer (Banderas) who volunteers at a New York City public school to teach dance. Brown shines in the role of a troubled student who participates in this new attempt to reform students in detention through ballroom dance lessons.
Brown, who was born in Harlem and raised in Brooklyn, currently resides in New York City.

One Tree Hill quote 5x09

One Tree Hill Quote 5x09:
"There was a high school basketball game tonight somewhere in America. A team won and a team lost. That's not the real story. The real story is about fathers and sons. It's about life and time and change. Girls and boys went to the game. They dressed and hoped to fit in. Some did. Some didn't. It's a story that has history and chapters yet to be written. There was a high school basketball game tonight somewhere in America. Reporters will report. They'll tell you who the high scorer was and what the keys to the game were. But that's not the real story. As a matter of fact, that's not the story at all."

The Miracle of St. Anthony: A Season with Coach Bob Hurley and Basketball's M...
by Adrian Wojnarowski
Amazon Price: $4.99
Customer Review: This is a very good inspirational book about an underdog inner city basketball team rising up to be the best, coached by Bob Hurley--best high school coach in small, broken down parochial school. Kids all had problems and he taught character and perseverance as well as basketball. It's tells how the coach motivated and taught his players. Parts moved a bit slow but it's definitely worth your time reading this one!
Coaching (and teaching) tips I got out of it included the following:
*Always keep the bar high and require respect.
*Never let anyone slide--keep on them all the time.
*Coach all the players, not just the best.
*Make kids earn your respect and ignore them until they do.
*Give everyone a role--even those on the bench.
*Use drastic measures (wrestling practice) to punish sloppy playing.
*Use the drastic measure practice for motivating in the future.
*Let the players experience the glory, keep low profile as coach.
*Help players make good decisions concerning their futures.

Slam!
by Walter Dean Myers
Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: Slam takes place in Harlem, New York. It is about a guy named Slam Harris. Slam loves to play basketball and loves the girls, but academics are not his thing, so, he tries his hardest to keep his grades up to stay on the team.
The climax is when his coach asks Slam to take a season off of basketball. My favorite part of the book, however is when his dad coaches the team, and when he masters his double crossover.
Even the cover of the book is interesting. It tells about the book and that he loves to play basketball. It also shows what he looks like so you can imagine it while you read the book.
I loved this book so much. It is one of the best books I have ever read. This book should be for people 12 and up because of the language, sexual content, drugs, and some mild violence. I would read it hands down any day over any other book.

The Perfect Shot (Young Adult Fiction)
by Elaine Marie Alphin
Amazon Price: $12.89
Customer Review: The novel, The Perfect Shot, by Elaine Marie Alphin, is probably the best book I have ever read. It is basically about a teenager named Brian Hammek. He was outside playing basketball, and he watches his girlfriend get murdered. He loves to play basketball. One day he went to court to try to set his girlfriend's father free, he was kicked out of the courtroom and he hid in the bathroom and was threatened by his girlfriend's murderer. After a game he was up in his room when the murderer broke into his house and tried to kill him. He made the perfect shot on the murderer and saved his family's lives. I think the pace of this book was different than you would find in other books. It starts out fast, but then it slows down. In the end it speeds back up again. If you like thrillers, than this is a book you need to read. You never what is going to happened. That is a quick review of The Perfect Shot.
In These Girls, Hope is a Muscle
by Madeleine Blais
Amazon Price: $11.16
Customer Review: This book is filled with the most mundane details about each girl on the team, the town and people of Amherst and surrounding towns, local history, Emily Dickinson, the evolution of women's sports, etc., but it provides very little text about basketball itself. It devotes only a few pages in the whole book to describing anything that actually occurred during a basketball game. I read it with my 13 year old daughter, who is developing an interest in basketball, and it was a bit tedious for us both.
The Last Shot: City Streets, Basketball Dreams
by Darcy Frey
Amazon Price: $10.40
Customer Review: I started reading this book on a monday morning and finished it that night. I couldnt stop reading and Darcy Frey kept me at the edge of my seat. I couldnt wait to see what would happen to the three other players featured in this book besides Stephon Marbury. I recommend this book to ANY basketball fan or anyone intrested in the struggles of lower income neighborhoods.
The Assist: Hoops, Hope, and the Game of Their Lives
by Neil Swidey
Amazon Price: $17.16
Customer Review: I almost couldn't put the book down. Finished it in three nights. Anyhow, the writing style is fantastic and the story is compelling. Lots of ups and downs. The best part is that the book is about real people. Definately read this book.
Student Athlete Handbook for the 21st Century: A guide to recruiting, scholar...
by Christine Grimes
Amazon Price: $13.45
Customer Review: This book was great. It had all the information in one place and was a quick, accessible read. It filled in the gaps in my knowledge about how my kid should approach coaches and how we should make a good media guide and video, and it gave me tips from an insider perspective. It even gives examples of professional sample letters for students to submit to prospective coaches. It's also a book that could help the whole team (we found lots of info to share and pass on) and something our busy kids would still sit down and read (and I can't imagine my son plunking down with one of those huge books and doing that). This book had everything I needed to know in one place. I could have googled for weeks for information and still not found everything in this book (I tried!). The price was right and I checked it out ahead of time with the search inside to get a feel for what it was like. It provided everything it promised.
Eagle Blue: A Team, a Tribe, and a High School Basketball Season in Arctic Al...
by D'Orso Michael
Amazon Price: $16.29
Customer Review: Any sports fan who picks up "Eagle Blue" will not be disappointed, although you should like this one even if you could care less about hoops....Basketball is the stage for the story, but not the story itself. This isn't your typical book depicting some world-weary NBA star or jaded coach. D'Orso makes you care about the players and coaches at a tiny school literally in the middle of nowhere, thus their wins (and losses) somehow become your own. If that were as far as this book took you, it would be satisfying just on that basis. But it doesn't end there.
By the time you're done reading "Eagle Blue", you'll likely become sympathetic with the people populating its pages. Theirs is a culture that has been decimated, and you can see very real defeat among many tribal members. Note: D'Orso interjects his own politics when he talks about ANWR, but it's not as much a distraction as it could've been. The real story is how a group of teenagers galvanizes a town with nothing else to cheer about despite the efforts of some people, mostly outsiders, to kill what they have, and he thankfully keeps the focus on that.
If you're at all like me (and God help you if you are), you'll fight to stay awake until 3AM because you literally do not want to put this book down and fall aleep.
Shrink To Fit (Kimani Tru)
by Dona Sarkar
Amazon Price: $9.99
Customer Review: A realistic view point of a teenage girl who thinks she needs to be thin to be successful--and catch the boy! An important read for any girl who feels the pressures of society to lose weight.
