high school football Books
Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream
by H.g. Bissinger
Amazon Price: $10.85
Customer Review: This is my pick for the best sports book ever written, and the reason is because it transcends sports. It captures the mood and feel of small town America as well as any book since Larry McMurtry's The LAST PICTURE SHOW. What Bissinger describes about the so-called pinnacle of life in western Texas, playing for the local team, applies just as well to high school athletes in Ohio or Pennsylvania. The flip side, of course, is once the ride is over, so is your worth to the community.
Great, great read.
Deadline
by Chris Crutcher
Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: DEADLINE's Ben Wolf knows he is dying. An aggressive blood disease will kill him within the year if he isn't treated. With treatment, he might extend his life some. Ben chooses to refuse treatment. He also chooses to keep his condition a secret from everyone except his doctor and the therapist his doctor forces him to see. He throws himself into his last year of life. He finally tries out for football. He pursues the girl he's in lust with. He tries to sober up the town drunk. He acts up in class because what does it matter if he doesn't graduate?
Crutcher, as usual, doesn't fear including issues in his story. There's sexual and physical child abuse, alcoholism, and bigotry. At some points these issues threaten to overshadow Ben's story, but Crutcher keeps them under control.
The diminutive Ben feels fear. He feels sad and he doesn't want to die. Every time his brother or girlfriend talks to him about the future he feels guilty for his lies. But, at the same time, he's a happy narrator. He's doing things he loves and making the most of his final year. He does not regret choosing not to fight the illness with drugs nor does he regret the relationships he makes. (He should regret some of his jokes.)
I don't regret reading DEADLINE. I cried at the end, yes. Ben dies. There is no miracle cure. But I thoroughly enjoyed spending time in his head, watching him do some things so right while still making large mistakes. I cried, but I felt happy. Ben worked hard to make sure the people he affected most would be able to handle his death. He made a choice at the beginning of the novel and defended it to the death. I respect him for that. I will also continue to read Crutcher faithfully, no matter how many of his books get banned.
Excerpted from In Bed With Books
Dairy Queen
by Catherine Murdock
Amazon Price: $8.99
Customer Review: This book series is my new obsession. Picking up Dairy Queen at the library on a passing recommendation, I began the first chapter right before bed. After literally howling with laughter, I had to sneak out to the other room to finish (so I wouldn't bother my husband), and ended up staying up until 2:00 am. Then, I spent most of the rest of the night thinking about it. The next morning, I woke up exhausted, but managed to read it again. Since then, I've read it two more times. WHY? WHY? WHY? What is the power this book has on me?
I adore D.J. even though she is nothing like me. Her situation is so compelling. All the crazy things that happen to her, all the hardships, all the life-learning...her voice makes going through them with her incredibly moving and satisfying, not to mention she's hilarious.
This is a beautiful story written with a very skilled hand. I recommend it to everyone as an entertaining and quality book.
Twelve Mighty Orphans: The Inspiring True Story of the Mighty Mites Who Ruled...
by Jim Dent
Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: Maybe it's because I am from Fort Worth, and I consider myself to be an AMATEUR local historian; however, I just could not put this book down! I read the entire thing in one night, because I couldn't stop. The story is gripping...makes you laugh, makes you cry. This should definately be made into a movie, if it isn't being done already.
Occasionally I'll drive by the Masonic Home and imagine it in all its football glory.
Gym Candy
by Carl Deuker
Amazon Price: $10.88
Customer Review: I teach Deuker's "Night Hoops" in my eighth grade English classes and it's consistently popular with even the reluctant readers. But now, I've found a novel I like even more. I like it because it wrestles with issues deeper than sports. I like it because it doesn't take the easy way out in the end. And I like it because it's just a damn good story, timely and entertaining.
Despite my high endorsement, I do have one quibble. I'm very familiar with weights and lifting, and one sentence reveals a lack of care to details: "Now he was standing in front of the mirror, bench-pressing two hundred pounds . . ." Every bench press I know involves lying on the bench, not standing.
That one quibble aside, this book is bound to be popular with boys facing the same issues Mick Johnson is facing.
November Blues
by Sharon M. Draper
Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: I ordered this book for my in class library and I have not been able to keep it on the shelf. My students are lining up to read this book. Great addition to any library. Students find that the characters and situations are relevant to them.
When the Game Stands Tall: The Story of the De La Salle Spartans and Football...
by Neil Hayes
Amazon Price: $11.53
Customer Review: I thought this book was excellent. Not only is the story of such a remarkable winning streak noteworthy in itself, the story of Coach Bob Ladoceur will change many people's view of the nature of a winning coach. It appears that he and his staff really do care more about their players than about the game and, certainly, The Streak. I learned some key things about what makes high school boys tick and what makes teams accomplish more than they believe they can.
The Hurricanes: One High School Team's Homecoming After Katrina
by Jere Longman
Amazon Price: $17.16
Thunder on the Tundra
by Lew Freedman
Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: I liked the book. I liked the background information. In the event, you have been to Barrow, it is a vivid recount of the life in Barrow. It captures the outlook of the elders of Barrow and their heritage.
The global warming part leaves me cold. The mention of Al Gore leaves me more frost bitten an any game the Whalers play.
My grandson was part of the team. If I overlook the parts about global warming, I would rate the book a 6 star.
It is a book I will keep and revisit. Fran Tate and Joe add a new prescriptive to Barrow, The Bower's restaurant (just outside the rib arch) serves the best oriental food money can buy.
The price is right for a look at the Barrow Whalers. Don't ask them about global warming when there is 2 feet of snow on the field in May 2008.
Lessons of the Game: The Untold Story of High School Football
by Derek Sparks
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: The book, Lessons of the game by Derek Sparks tells about something that parents and many high school students do not even know about. Derek Sparks who wrote about his life growing up through high school; he lived a life far diverse than the average teenager. While other kids and students are working hard to keep good grades by staying in class and studying; nothing like that applied to Derek in high school. Everything was taken care of and it did not really matter who was doing all of this. While other normal families struggle with money, Derek had money shoved into his pocket, and if he desired food or any thing like that there was always someone who would go out and get it for him. He did not have an existent Dad as he walked out on him and he left his Mother who lives in Texas to play high school football in California. Derek did not go out to California by himself as his Uncle Jay brought him out there and tried to do what was best for him. As he could not live with his Uncle Jay, each high school had plenty to offer Derek including living in his own home or apartment near the school with all the expenses being taken care of.
You follow Derek on and off the field and learn how people would sell him out and not protect him from what he should not have to deal with as a young kid. Not only would people not do what was best for him but also they would do what ever they could to have him on their team or make money out of him because of being a "star" athlete and having the ability of becoming a professional. This is a great book and a must read for any one who is interested in sports. Even if you are not, I would recommend Lessons of the Game by Derek Sparks because once you start reading, you will not want to put it down.
