Diaz is on the pulse of all things celebrity - always front and center reporting the most up-to?date breaking celebrity news. Carlos Diaz joined "Extra" in 2005 as a correspondent after having spent more than a decade in news, sports and entertainment. Throughout his award-winning career, Diaz has worked in all aspects of media including television, radio, print and the Internet. In 1997, he became the host of ESPN's "Scholastic Sports America," a nationwide high school sports show for which he was honored with a Telly Award for his coverage of coast-to-coast prep sports. He has also spent time as a high school sports reporter for Indianapolis' NBC affiliate, WTHR-TV. Originally from Indianapolis, Diaz graduated with honors from Indiana University. In 1996, Carlos won the Edward R. Murrow award for his coverage of the Indianapolis Colts. For the last two years, he has hosted Indianapolis's Heartland Film Festival as well as a variety of Indy 500 star-studded events. high school sports Books
Deadline
by Chris Crutcher
Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: This is Chris Crutcher at his most brilliant - and that's really saying something. Told in Ben Wolf's voice, Deadline is honest and real, both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream
by H.g. Bissinger
Amazon Price: $10.85
Customer Review: This is my pick for the best sports book ever written, and the reason is because it transcends sports. It captures the mood and feel of small town America as well as any book since Larry McMurtry's The LAST PICTURE SHOW. What Bissinger describes about the so-called pinnacle of life in western Texas, playing for the local team, applies just as well to high school athletes in Ohio or Pennsylvania. The flip side, of course, is once the ride is over, so is your worth to the community.

Great, great read.

Dairy Queen
by Catherine Murdock
Amazon Price: $8.99
Customer Review: A your-not-so-typical teenage girl named DJ, tends to her family's farm while her dad is recovering from a hip injury. All is well- well, as well as it used to be anyways- until a QB , Brian Nelson, of a rival high school is sent to help DJ out with the farm. What DJ wasn't expecting from this particular jock was to start encouraging her to talk; about her dreams, her flunking in English class and her strikingly odd family.

I somewhat knew that this book would be good, because I've read encouraging reviews before purchasing it. What struck me the most about this particular books was its authenticity. I wouldn't wonder at it if I learned that DJ was somewhere in Wisconsin painting the barn with Brian Nelson. That's how real the characters were. I also loved the writing style, DJ has flunked English, and that fact is strongly established in "her" writing style. A refreshing read, as refreshing as a glass of cold fresh milk.

The Hurricanes: One High School Team's Homecoming After Katrina
by Jere Longman
Amazon Price: $17.16
Customer Review: Jere Longman has written an excellent book chronicling one parish's reaction to Hurricane Katrina, focusing on the high school football team but weaving in incredibly useful information about the people and history of Plaquemines Parish and all of Southeast Louisiana. It's a story of the importance of football in the fabric of a community in southern Louisiana.

Having played high school football in Louisiana myself "back in the day", I recognized so much in the story of coach Cyril Crutchfield and the Plaquemines Parish residents. The loud, profane and physical football coach. The sheriff's deputies who were former players themselves and still long to ride the bus with the team to away games. The players whose entire lives revolve around the sport. The anachronism of the wealth of resources and the grinding poverty of that part of the world. It really hit home.

The book is well-written and balanced - as an example, Longman strives to present the Belle Chasse side of the Plaquemines Parish feud, rather than simply showing the South Plaquemines/Port Sulphur side. And by tracking Randall Mackey, Jamal Recasner and the Bastrop Rams, he shows the intertwining of relationships in that part of the world.

As this review is written, Coach Crutchfield, Ridge Turner, Lyle Fitte and the rest of the Hurricanes are on their way to another state championship. One Times-Picayune reporter recently noted that they only way the Hurricanes don't win state is if they give up the sport of football between now and December. I recommend you read this book, and follow the Hurricanes through the rest of their season.

The Miracle of St. Anthony: A Season with Coach Bob Hurley and Basketball's M...
by Adrian Wojnarowski
Amazon Price: $4.99
Customer Review: This is a very good inspirational book about an underdog inner city basketball team rising up to be the best, coached by Bob Hurley--best high school coach in small, broken down parochial school. Kids all had problems and he taught character and perseverance as well as basketball. It's tells how the coach motivated and taught his players. Parts moved a bit slow but it's definitely worth your time reading this one!

Coaching (and teaching) tips I got out of it included the following:

*Always keep the bar high and require respect.
*Never let anyone slide--keep on them all the time.
*Coach all the players, not just the best.
*Make kids earn your respect and ignore them until they do.
*Give everyone a role--even those on the bench.
*Use drastic measures (wrestling practice) to punish sloppy playing.
*Use the drastic measure practice for motivating in the future.
*Let the players experience the glory, keep low profile as coach.
*Help players make good decisions concerning their futures.

Whale Talk
by Chris Crutcher
Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: T J, whose full name is The Toa Jones (there's a joke there if you pronounce it correctly), relates the story of his eighteenth year, the year he graduates. He has been asked by his English teacher to form a college swimming team, but there is no pool, and it seems T J is the only swimmer.

T J gives a frank account of events of that year, not omitting his own short-comings. Raised by adoptive parents, he being the biological son of a European mother and Japanese/black American father, in a predominantly white small town outside Wahington, he struggles to keep his temper in check in the face of the many injustices resulting from the racism and bigotry of small-minded jocks.

Accepting the challenge of forming a swim team he assembles a curios bunch of misfits and the downtrodden and champions their cause as he strives to attain a coveted varsity Letter-Jacket, normally the preserve of high achievers in the accepted sports, for each member of his team.

It is a heart-warming tale as the team unite in their cause despite the fact they seemed doomed to failure from the start. At the same time likeable T J has his own problems to deal with, but here his stable family upbringing helps him to maintain balance despite himself.

At times funny, at times moving, with a tense and gripping finale, it makes for an involving story. It does get a little preachy at times, but it is a good cause, showing up racisms and family abuse for what it is; written by someone who clearly has some experience in such matters.

Out of the Pocket
by Bill Konigsberg
Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review:
This is an important book. I hope that all high school students have a chance to read and reflect on this moving story of a high school football star coming to terms with his sexuality, the world and his future. This book deserves to be in every high school library, including small towns where students who are struggling with their sexuality so often feel isolated and alone. In addition to being a "good read" this book will provide support and understanding for all students, parents and teachers.

Slam!
by Walter Dean Myers
Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: Slam takes place in Harlem, New York. It is about a guy named Slam Harris. Slam loves to play basketball and loves the girls, but academics are not his thing, so, he tries his hardest to keep his grades up to stay on the team.

The climax is when his coach asks Slam to take a season off of basketball. My favorite part of the book, however is when his dad coaches the team, and when he masters his double crossover.

Even the cover of the book is interesting. It tells about the book and that he loves to play basketball. It also shows what he looks like so you can imagine it while you read the book.

I loved this book so much. It is one of the best books I have ever read. This book should be for people 12 and up because of the language, sexual content, drugs, and some mild violence. I would read it hands down any day over any other book.

November Blues
by Sharon M. Draper
Amazon Price: $11.55
Customer Review: My summer school students, most of whom NEVER read a book under any circumstances, LOVE her books. They really relate to them. We read the Tears of a Tiger trilogy as an assignment and the students begged me to order all of her other books because they read the trilogy so fast. Highly recommended to get distinterested young people to start reading. Fast.

Gym Candy
by Carl Deuker
Amazon Price: $10.88
Customer Review: I teach Deuker's "Night Hoops" in my eighth grade English classes and it's consistently popular with even the reluctant readers. But now, I've found a novel I like even more. I like it because it wrestles with issues deeper than sports. I like it because it doesn't take the easy way out in the end. And I like it because it's just a damn good story, timely and entertaining.
Despite my high endorsement, I do have one quibble. I'm very familiar with weights and lifting, and one sentence reveals a lack of care to details: "Now he was standing in front of the mirror, bench-pressing two hundred pounds . . ." Every bench press I know involves lying on the bench, not standing.
That one quibble aside, this book is bound to be popular with boys facing the same issues Mick Johnson is facing.
