Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
by Greg Mortenson, David Oliver Relin
Amazon Price: $8.25
Customer Review: I heard much about this book; many have written reviews about this book. I expected a heroic story about white man goes to brown country, sees horrible plight, saves brown people. It is about the journey of Greg Mortenson - but in his journey you "see" the people of Pakistan (and little of Afghanistan.) And yes, you also see Greg's personal struggles to understand and navigate cultures so different than his own.
What surprised me was how I choked when reading about the death of a key donor. I realized there are many journeys in this book, many different people I felt connected to, many transformations. I didn't expect it from a non-fiction book.
What stayed with me: Feed the creative minds of women and cultures will change.
The end of the book resonates -- we Americans must live up our ideals as an democratic, empathetic nation -- and stop fueling the anger of the Muslim world. Books not bombs.
Please remember to vote in this critical election year.
Math Doesn't Suck: How to Survive Middle School Math Without Losing Your Mind...
by Danica McKellar
Amazon Price: $9.00
Customer Review: My daughter is starting high school this fall and I just didn't feel she was prepared to handle the math that was coming her way. I searched the internet for math games and instruction but couldn't find much for her age..(most of the games were geared for younger children). A friend let me borrow this book and my daughter and I just ran with this. We did a chapter a day together and they are short and simple enough to get through in about 10 or 15 minutes....and in that short period of daily time my daughter now knows how to add/subtract/multiply/divide fractions and decimals among other things. This is a girl that struggled with math since grade one and in under 15 minutes a day of "easy reading" she can do any problem I give her. The author should become a teacher!
Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally
by John M. Van de Walle
Amazon Price: $112.79
Customer Review: I bought this book for the Math Methods class in my credential program. I think it will be a book I will use as a great resource when teaching Math. I highly recommend this book to any teacher that teaches or will teach math.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (Diary of a Wimpy Kid)
by Jeff Kinney
Amazon Price: $10.15
Customer Review: I borrowed this book from my public library and I was at first impressed with the little pictures and the layout of the book which really made it inviting to read. However, on reading it, I don't think there is anything really interesting about this book. It's not even that funny to me. I did read the whole book though. I have a better recommendation. Try « The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole » by Sue Townsend. There is about three in the series and while the first one was written in the 1980s and makes references to UK society and culture, it is a much more sophisticated read and a lot more funny, sad, etc. The Adrian Mole diaries begins when Adrian is 13 and 3/4 years old so a little bit older than Greg but not much more.
Two-star rating overall. Could be a lot more interesting.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
by Jeff Kinney
Amazon Price: $10.15
Customer Review: This book was so awesome I couldn't put it down. I read it in 2 days and couldn't wait to get Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. I hope this author writes a lot more books because they are very enjoyable and entertaining.
Schooled
by Anisha Lakhani
Amazon Price: $16.29
Customer Review: Disappointing, shallow, inaccurate, exaggerated, and most of all, hypocritical. As the parent of a student in Ms Lakhani's class, I am shocked at the "bite the hand that feeds you...." sentiment that is so thoroughly infused in her would-be bestseller. Frankly, had she given a little more nuance to the characters, the diversity of students, the attitudes of most parents, etc. the book would have been far less boring.
But the one point I really want to make in this review is that Ms. Lakhani, in real life, was a very good teacher BUT she also encouraged the very superficial attitudes that she so vilifies in the book. Her classroom was decorated with many personal accoutrements of luxury, such as toile wallpaper and decorative accessories. It was fun, but also somewhat reminiscent of Eloise at the Plaza in the midst of a school that looked like a.....school. At the time, I thought it was quite creative of her, why not set a little personal atmosphere? But now, it seems that she was just trying to keep up & impress the little princesses. And in the process, she encouraged those children and others to emulate that sort of lifestyle because they looked up to her.
It is hard to imagine any teacher, even at 23 years old, identifying with a 13 year old spoiled brat, regardless of how hip the clothing. And for sure, the level of hipness described is such a minuscule percentage of children across all the most exclusive schools, it's so unbelievably silly that Ms Lakhani was influenced. Not to say that one can't have envy, but there are frankly, not that many families in any one of these schools that live life with the ridiculous values she describes. There are many rich families, but most use better judgment. They appreciate creative education, hard work, and a sense of proportion. The over-the-top families that live such opulent & self-centered lives are spread among all 12 grades in 15 schools (or more)---they may be conspicuous but they don't dominate the mode of behavior in any one grade.
The last point about the fall of Ms Lakhani is her choice of character names, which is downright cruel--not even thinly disguised as to some students. Why victimize the children?
So, I am sorry that a good teacher, who was well liked by many kinds of students and parents, has chosen to write a very exaggerated account of her years teaching. There is some truth in some of her stories, but the spin is misleading, which seems intentional. Unfortunately Ms....
When Kids Can't Read: What Teachers Can Do: A Guide for Teachers 6-12
by Kylene Beers
Amazon Price: $26.55
Customer Review: I have not read this book nor am I a teacher, but have a question. Does this book help with other professionals and adults? For example someone who knows science and takes Calculus improves comprehension analytically? Or someone who knows spelling and now uses shapes for math may help in identifying, say, words? So, not to just teach the kids how to read but to help them with their profession (outside of just teaching) or with their everyday activity/living too? Sorta like self empowerment. Thanks! Steve
Sorry for the negative rating. I just want to be indifferent about it and I cannot put zero stars.

Do I Really Have to Teach Reading?: Content Comprehension, Grades 6-12
by Cris Tovani
Amazon Price: $13.50
Customer Review: I bought this book for one of my graduate classes on teaching reading in subject areas that don't normally cover it. It's very insightful, and there are a lot of helpful suggestions.
The Wednesday Wars
by Gary D. Schmidt
Amazon Price: $10.88
Customer Review: We listened to the audiobook on a three generations family road trip and everyone loved the book. Granted, some of us were raised on Long Island in the early sixties (duck and cover drill, LILCO power outages, etc. rang true). However, even the twelve year old reluctant reader in the group raised in Mass. couldn't wait until we got back in the car to listen to more. It is a book with something for everyone. There is plenty of humor and serious concerns along with an examination of family dynamics. The setting is the Vietnam war and there are plenty of parallels for today as well. In summary, give this book a try and consider reading or listening as a family. "You sir, are a pied ninny", is now a favorite family quote.
