Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RNŽ Examination (Saunders Compre... by Linda Anne Silvestri Amazon Price: $44.95
Customer Review: Although I am only halfway through the text, I have found it covers a multitude of topics and is very easy to use. I especially enjoy the accompanying CD which provides questions similar to the ones I experienced in nursing school. As an added benefit, there are a few assessment questions with an audio component that require knowledge from a student's clinical experience. With over twelve hundred pages, it is rather large and time-consuming, and some topics are not discussed in great depth. However, for an outstanding general review this book is well worth the money.
Iconoclast: A Neuroscientist Reveals How to Think Differently by Gregory Berns Amazon Price: $19.77
Customer Review: Iconoclast in the case of the book means One who attacks cherished beliefs. I think most entrepreneurs are good at this. They challenge the known and think creatively.
The following is a summary of Iconoclast from Oct 2008 Fast Company which I think touches most of the salient points:
-- The brain is fundamentally a lazy piece of meat. It doesn't want to waste energy.
-- In order to think creatively, you must develop new neural pathways and break out of the cycle of experience - dependant categorization. As Mark Twain said, "Education consists mainly in what we have unlearned." For most people, this does not come naturally. Often, the harder you think differently, the more rigid the categories become.
-- Fortunately, the networks that govern both perception and imagination can be reprogrammed. By deploying your attention differently, the frontal cortex, which contains rules for decision making, can reconfigure neural networks so that you can see things that you didn't see before. You need a novel stimulus -- either a new piece of information or an unfamiliar environment -- to jolt attentional systems awake. The more radical the change, the greater the likelihood of fresh insights.
-- Only when you consciously confront your brain's shortcuts will you be able to imagine outside of its boundaries.
So I know I want to "break the rules" and be creative. I even know a bit of how to do it like breaking routine and feeding myself knowledge. I think the book should have had more practical tips on how to do that.
I only gave the book 2 stars because it is a tough read. True scientists will like it more than I do.

The Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics, 32nd edition (Spiral Manual Se... by Washington University School of Medicine, Daniel H Cooper, Andrew J Krainik, Sam J Lubner, Hilary EL Reno Amazon Price: $44.95
Customer Review: The Washington Manual is like a mini-DiPiro's. It is especially great because it is small enough to be carried in a backpack without the extra weight. The material inside is not too general yet not too overwhelming. Being a pharmacist that have been out of school for a few years, it is a great review of disease states. The book covers the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy for each disease state.

Breaks down school by school what is needed to apply and gives a little bit about the school atmosphere and program type. Also gives degree types that are available. Extremely helpful!!! Very reasonably priced, item arrived in excellent condition.
Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry (Lippincott's Illustrated Revi... by Pamela C Champe, Richard A Harvey, Denise R Ferrier Amazon Price: $49.45
Customer Review: Attributes:
1. Wonderfully written in a lucid and point-of-fact manner w/minimal fluff.
2. The correlations are clearly laid out and a must for sensing the overall picture.
3. Fantastic diagrams and there are plenty of them.
4. Entire text is also accessible online which is very important for me because I can cut and paste the stuff and further abridge the contents of the book.
5. Easily readable from cover to cover.....and doing so multiple times is a really good way to encompass the entire width of the subject.
6. Very succinct chapter reviews at the end of each chapter which would satisfy the USMLE Step 1 needs I would think.
I for one am using this for my med-school biochem class and it is a veritable feast of biochem knowledge w/o being mentally bludgeoned by our prescribed text at AUC which is Lehninger.
I only wish the authors were able to write an entire textbook. A bridge between Lehninger and this guide. I for one would buy it in a heart-beat.
Thank you Dr's. Harvey, Champe and Ferrier...a superb and well executed effort.
