Big Brother 9 UK - Alexandra Audition Tape - Removed
by rss@youtube.com (habbovideodude)
27 Aug 2008 at 12:18pm

Alexandra's Profile Name:Alexandra Age:23 Home:Croydon Job:Accounts executive Starsign:Leo Status:Single Alexandra's Bio Alexandra is a single mother, who had her daughter when she was 16 years old. Her daughter is now seven, and Alexandra says she's proud of what she's achieved, in raising her child on her own, while also having a good job and nice cars. She was raised as a Christian, but a few years ago converted to Islam. However, despite trying to go to her mosque as often as she can, she now describes herself as a non-practising Muslim. Alexandra's philosophy in life is "go hard or go home", and she believes that private schools should be scrapped and that everyone should be educated to the same standard for free, so everyone has an equal start in life. She describes herself as quirky, outgoing and a go-getter, and hates to be bored. And while she's proud of what she's achieved for a 23-year-old, she's a little disappointed as she wanted to be a millionaire by now. However, Alexandra does claim she's famous in Croydon and says that lot of people want to socialise with her. Her own worst critic, Alexandra admits she's not very pleasant to live with sometimes, but declares herself a natural born leader. Appearance-wise, she gives herself 10/10 for looks, and says "love me or hate me - you'll be obsessed!"

BABYLON 5 WAR COLLECTIONS: The Telepath War I
by rss@youtube.com (rantamaki)
26 Aug 2008 at 6:42am

Babylon 5 War Collections: The Telepath War Part I "Psi Cops" are members of a para-military body enforcing laws related to telepaths and operates with few checks against their authority. This is especially true when dealing with non-telepaths who have done violence against a member of the Psi Corps. For example, after capturing a murderer of telepaths, they implanted an image in his mind so horrifying that the person had to be permanently restrained to prevent him from ripping out his own eyes. In another case, a man who murdered a Psi Cop was ejected from a spaceship. While Psi Cops claim to only want to bring rogue telepaths back to the Psi Corps family, they are likely to kill a rogue telepath upon capturing one. Psi Cops possess a rating of P-12[1] (the highest rating within the "P-scale" used in the series to measure psionic strength) P-13's or slightly higher are a rarity and some of those that are eventually found out to be P-13's, also become rogue telepaths and go on the run in fear of what the Psi Corp will do with them through experiments (A Race Through Dark Places), Psi Corp also use telepaths of lower ratings in support roles. Psi Corp has attempted to increase a telepath's abilities through genetic manipulations and experiments, one such experimentation produced enhanced abilities in a P-10 level telepath named Jason Ironheart, in an attempt to produce a stable telekinetics and stronger telepaths for the Psi Corp. Ironheart volunteered to have his telepathic powers increased, but they soon became unstable. He fled from Psi-Corps, eventually coming to B5 where he set up an escape route for other rogue telepaths, but was pursued by Bester. However, Ironheart began to undergo destructive "mindquakes," releasing bursts of psychokinetic energy so powerful they threatened the station. As Ironheart realized that his abilities had grown too great to contain, he discorporated his physical form, but not before leaving Talia with a gift; enhanced telepathic shields, and even a bit of telekinesis of her own (Mind War). Doctor Stephen Franklin of Babylon 5 participated in an underground railroad to help rogue telepaths escape from the Corps (A Race Through Dark Places). Eventually, the telepaths who escaped provided assistance during the closing days of the Shadow War. Later on, President John Sheridan of the Interstellar Alliance allowed rogue telepaths to form a small colony on Babylon 5. The situation ended in violence when the Psi Cops attempted to take the rogue telepaths back to Earth. After the colony on Babylon 5 was forced to leave following the death of its leader, Byron, Lyta Alexander began a crusade against the Psi Corps. Her actions led to a war in which rogue telepaths and non telepaths fought the Psi Corps. The old Psi Corps was destroyed, and a new Psionic Monitoring Commission was built to replace it. Once the Telepath War was over, the Psionic Monitoring Commission dedicated itself to hunting down those members of the Corps who committed war crimes, such as Alfred Bester. He was eventually captured and sentenced to spending the rest of his life in prison with his abilities taken away by drugs. Many private schools were founded to educate telepaths; they met with mixed success. Telepaths were allowed a much wider range of options as far as their lives were concerned. Rather than having to join the Psi Corps, they were able to do almost anything they wanted. This included joining the Earth Alliance military and working for private organizations.

Myth:Only Capitalism Provides Motivation-16of34
by rss@youtube.com (Beingism)
22 Aug 2008 at 9:35pm

http://Beingism.org Message Board: http://www.beingism.org/board/viewforum.php?f=22 Although the value of productive work can be overstated, it is indeed true that it is often useful and necessary, and it is also true that people usually do need to be motivated to work for reasons other than the sheer pleasure of the activity. One might ask, however, whether these facts really justify the income disparity between someone who makes $17 thousand dollars a year and someone who makes $17 million, or even the difference between someone who earns $20 thousand and someone who earns $200 thousand. More generally, it seems highly unlikely that people will stop working without the ever-present threat of losing (for instance) their homes or their ability to provide food. Similarly, it is doubtful that people need to feel as though they have the capacity to earn millions of dollars more than they need to buy exorbitant luxuries in order to motivate them to continue to be productive. It is also worth noting that although motivating productivity may be one important thing that we do with our wealth as a society, it is far from the only valid use for it. Just a few examples of alternative useful places to invest wealth which have nothing to do with motivating work include preventing domestic violence, educating people who can't afford to pay for private schools, or curing lethal diseases which are ignored by the free market because there is minimal profit in healing poor people.

private schools Books
Animal Farm (Signet Classics)
by George Orwell
Amazon Price: $9.99
Customer Review: It is the rare political book that is both entertaining and thought provoking. Rarer still to be unforgettable and insightful and life-changing. Animal Farm, for me was all this.

The allogory is powerful and the use of farm animals both clever and entertaining, and helped makes the story all the more vivid and memorable. The story is well know, a group of farm animals eventually led by the boar Napolean, overthrow the capitalist farmer and create an idealistic worker's paradise. Little by little and bit by bit they become not only as corrupt as the former system, but even worse as exemplified by their ruthlessness and hypocrisy. The reader comes away much more cynical about utopian ideals, which sounds like a bad thing but is actually a good thing. Incredibly powerful book, with the weight of truth and some kind of native energy that makes a despairing fairy-tale into a life-changing lesson. I've read plenty of books that I've enjoyed more, but few I've been so drastically impacted by. This book is a must for an adolescent, and if you missed it then even if you're eighty-five pick it up and read it now. It's both historical and timeless.

Sophocles, The Oedipus Cycle: Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone
by Sophocles
Amazon Price: $11.20
Customer Review: This version of Sophocles's Oedipus trilogy--Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone--is a great edition for students and seasoned classicists alike. The translations by Dudley Fitts and Robert Fitzgerald are modern while still being poetic, and complete while still being very, very fast-paced. For instance, I read Antigone in about forty minutes, and I'm a slow reader.

Fitts and Fitzgerald have sacrificed some accuracy and literalness to achieve their extraordinary pacing and readability, but while their translations are not always true to the original text, they more than make up for it with the sheer power which which they grab the reader. I had read Oedipus Rex before, but I had never felt it like this. The plays come alive for the reader. The tragic end of Oedipus Rex was particularly moving.

This edition includes some notes and commentary, but the works stand well on their own, without the comments of a later generation. Overall, though, the briskness and modern sound of these plays make this one of the best translations available to students today.

Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Had to order textbooks for my two boys who are in high school. Very easy to order. The right price AND delivered as promised.

Schooled
by Anisha Lakhani
Amazon Price: $16.29
Customer Review: Disappointing, shallow, inaccurate, exaggerated, and most of all, hypocritical. As the parent of a student in Ms Lakhani's class, I am shocked at the "bite the hand that feeds you...." sentiment that is so thoroughly infused in her would-be bestseller. Frankly, had she given a little more nuance to the characters, the diversity of students, the attitudes of most parents, etc. the book would have been far less boring.
But the one point I really want to make in this review is that Ms. Lakhani, in real life, was a very good teacher BUT she also encouraged the very superficial attitudes that she so vilifies in the book. Her classroom was decorated with many personal accoutrements of luxury, such as toile wallpaper and decorative accessories. It was fun, but also somewhat reminiscent of Eloise at the Plaza in the midst of a school that looked like a.....school. At the time, I thought it was quite creative of her, why not set a little personal atmosphere? But now, it seems that she was just trying to keep up & impress the little princesses. And in the process, she encouraged those children and others to emulate that sort of lifestyle because they looked up to her.
It is hard to imagine any teacher, even at 23 years old, identifying with a 13 year old spoiled brat, regardless of how hip the clothing. And for sure, the level of hipness described is such a minuscule percentage of children across all the most exclusive schools, it's so unbelievably silly that Ms Lakhani was influenced. Not to say that one can't have envy, but there are frankly, not that many families in any one of these schools that live life with the ridiculous values she describes. There are many rich families, but most use better judgment. They appreciate creative education, hard work, and a sense of proportion. The over-the-top families that live such opulent & self-centered lives are spread among all 12 grades in 15 schools (or more)---they may be conspicuous but they don't dominate the mode of behavior in any one grade.
The last point about the fall of Ms Lakhani is her choice of character names, which is downright cruel--not even thinly disguised as to some students. Why victimize the children?
So, I am sorry that a good teacher, who was well liked by many kinds of students and parents, has chosen to write a very exaggerated account of her years teaching. There is some truth in some of her stories, but the spin is misleading, which seems intentional. Unfortunately Ms....

The Official Filthy Rich Handbook
by Christopher Tennant
Amazon Price: $10.54
Customer Review: Making money is one thing, acquiring the tasteful mannerisms of the rich is another. This book helps newly minted money acquire the ways of old money.

I can't even begin to tell how many times I've met the noveau riche, and they've annoyed the heck out of me during the summer parties I've hosted in Newport, RI. I've instructed my butler to discreetly slip a copy of this book in the offender's butler's pocket so they may acquire better manners and taste.

These days, when I'm called on to deliver commencement addresses at sundry universities, I always make it a point to mention the book so that the kids know how to behave as soon as they sell their first dot-com. I'm also sponsoring translations of the book into both Chinese and Hindi so the newly rich from those countries can fit into our social scene here.

One final thought... show some taste by acquiring the hardcover. Leave the paperbacks to the staff "downstairs".

Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher's First Year
by Esmé Raji Codell
Amazon Price: $8.76
Customer Review: "Educating Esme" is a great book for any new or perspective teacher. She uses humor to demonstrate the struggles of a first year teacher, and yet the book isn't entirely about those struggles. It also includes some cute anecdotes about the little things that make you want to be a teacher and some great classroom ideas! This book is a great read if you want to be inspired as a teacher!

The Lively Art of Writing (Mentor)
by Lucile Vaughan Payne
Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: I am a Junior high school student in the International Baccalaureate Program and i must say, i have been praised by many teachers for my writing abilities. Yet, this book, assigned in our Rhetoric class, is a juvenile attempt to teach the art of writing. The LAW merely teaches subjects that are, to many, common sense, such as the avoidance of passive voice, but any valid points made by the book are nearly invisible in the horrible examples, such as drag racing or teen-agers. (yes that's how old the book is. It was written when "teenager" was not its own word.) Ultimately, the book teaches a style of writing that does not nurture the natural abilities of a writer, but dumbs them down. If i were to write a paper based on Mrs. Paine's guidelines in a college course, my professor would certainly look at me, as if i were a child, and ask if i wanted a lollipop, for it would definitely match the maturity of Mrs. Paine's writing rubric.

The Official Preppy Handbook
by Lisa Birnbach
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: This book was hilarious from front to back! Most would consider this insightful, funny, and one could quickly forget that the author is speaking about a preppy cult! I can say that because I am southern belle, and people stereotype us southern's as well. I love the fact we all live in American and from East to West each culture is different! God Bless American.

Death of a Salesman: Certain Private Conversations in Two Acts and a Requiem ...
by Arthur Miller
Amazon Price: $9.60
Customer Review: This classic play by Arthur Miller (1915-2005) examines human failure, high expectations, and the dark side of the American Dream. Willie Loman is an aging salesman whose figures have fallen to the point where he no longer makes a real living. Not only is his job in jeopardy; so is his family and self-worth. Loman reacts by deluding himself, living in the past, and by holding his sons to unrealistic expectations. Miller does a superb job in presenting a broken man sliding downwards. Such occurs in the sordid race of materialism and corporate success - one that leaves many broken souls in its path. Willie needs to face reality, and mend himself and his struggling family (and his family should help him too), but Miller's powerful script doesn't go there. Instead we have a deluded, beaten man sliding into mental illness - and worse.

Miller penned this play in 1949, as the USA was moving into postwar changes and a more suburbanized, corporate society. This play about the brutish world of expectations, materialism, and the illusive American dream is as much on target today as in 1949.
