It also highlights the difficulty, in a society guaranteeing free speech, of "civilising" public debate before it creates a fertile ground for actual killing. Rousing the uglier impulses of America is a symptom of an ideology in an advanced state of decay. But it might make a difference in a country still struggling to overcome the scars of slavery and long centuries of dehumanisation of black people. The last eight years in the US have been a nerve-wracking period. 9/11. The Iraq fiasco. The Katrina and New Orleans catastrophe. Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. The collapse of so many certainties. And now the structure of capitalism itself on the brink. The only remaining superpower looks weak. It cannot finance both the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the Bush administration's tax cuts for the rich. Petrol prices have gone through the roof. Bush disapproval ratings are the highest in the history of the US. The economy is in recession. By going ugly, McCain's campaign hopes to shift voters' attention away from the financial crisis and the Republicans' implication in the economic morass of the last years. Whether Obama wins or loses will depend on two factors. The first is whether the white working-class is convinced that racism is a luxury that they can ill-afford at a time when they can no longer buy petrol to drive to church. The second is Obama's capacity to bring into the game a new electorate. Meantime, Obama is playing the calm factor. Throughout this campaign, he has been extraordinarily disciplined, collected, reassuringly intelligent - and at times vague. As a black man in America, he cannot afford to appear to be angry. McCain has been unstable, bombastic, temperamental, and at times erratic and hysterical. During the last debate, he was more than ever given to bluster. A clear sign of a vigour gap, he looks old - a right-wing living replica of Lenin's mummy. For Obama to win, he has to exude authority and reason while building convergences among the races in support for the style of progressivism he advocates. The generational lurch toward liberalism evident among young whites helps in this regard.
