Conservatorium Amsterdam SummerSchool 2008 Impression
by rss@youtube.com (VertigoVideoFilms)
6 Oct 2008 at 8:00am
The Amsterdam Institute for Music from 1600-1800 (AIM) is an Early Music course targeting the historically informed performance of Baroque and Classical music. The course is open to participants of all ages (instrumentalists as well as vocalists) and will include private lessons from expert teachers from the Early Music Faculty at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, as well as workshops, master classes, lectures, concerts, and lots of chances to play with fellow students from all over the world.
Comparaison de la Musique Italienne et de la Musique Française
As the title suggests, this years summer course will examine the differences between the French and Italian musical styles of the 17th and 18th centuries, both in terms of composition and performance practice. Singers and instrumentalists will work, both in private lessons and master classes, on a broad range of repertoire from either Italy or France, and will perform at the workshop recitals. A highlight of the course will be a master class for harpsichordists led by Gustav Leonhardt. There will also be lectures by faculty members, and daily Baroque dance classes will keep participants moving with 18th-century grace.

Baroque Dance Course
This years summer course at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam offers all participants a rich opportunity to become acquainted with Baroque dance through daily lessons lead by historical dance specialist Maria Angad Gaur.
In 17th-century France, dance developed into a major art form. Thanks to King Louis XIV, who founded in 1661 the Académie Royal de Dance, dance became an inspirational model for instrumental music written by the greatest French composers of the time, many of whom danced themselves. Jean Baptiste Lully, for instance, was a very good dancer.
The French style became fashionable in the whole of Europe and inspired composers such as Telemann, Handel and J.S. Bach.
For musicians today, an experience with 17th-century dance will help to make clear the characteristic rhythms and tempi of Baroque music.
The course will include: basic Baroque dance steps, arm movements, and various dance rhythms in relationship to the music. In addition, the Feuïllet dance notation will be explained. We will also be working on an authentic choreography, along with the music belonging to it.

Leaps Summer School (2007)
by rss@youtube.com (DustyTaylor925)
22 Sep 2008 at 2:12pm
LEAPS stands for Lothian Equal Access Program for Schools. It is designed for young people who don't have a parent or guardian already in higher education. It is a two month course which teaches you the skills required for surviving university. I took part hoping to learned the skills I need and it has helped greatly with my study at College as taking notes is second nature to me. The school was also lots of fun with social events taking place at one part of the week which was great. The school was based at Edinburgh University and we had tutors for every ten people which were third year students; they were great and really helped us. There was a fun cook section of the week where students presented a recipe; it gave us a bit of light relief during the week.

This is from when me and my friends are on the after summer school. We all have different looks from now, especially our hair cuts. But basically it's a small flashback of how we rode the bus back to the metro from school.

The Clique Summer Collection #1: Massie (Clique Series)
Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: I was expecting more out of Lisi Harrison for this book.
it was okay, but not as good as dylan & kristen. Alicia's pretty much sucked too.
READ DYLAN AND KRISTEN!!
The Clique Summer Collection #3: Alicia (Clique Series)
Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: Even though ALICIA is the third book in THE CLIQUE SUMMER COLLECTION, I am yet to be bored by the series!
Alicia is the character of the Clique who can stand out in a crowd. She goes to spend her summer without her parents in Spain, and she and Nina (who came to OCD in the series and caused a lot of havoc) create a lot of trouble. Alicia finds herself with a job she does not want, to pay for something that she should care about, but really doesn't. And she is trying to land a spot in a music video for a local pop star.
How does she do it all and who will she meet along the way?
Alicia is a brilliant character because she is so real. She really cares about her family, and even though she gets herself into a few compromising positions, she plays them off very fashionably. That is the kind of character I root for. So get your beach towel and get ready to read this short but enthralling novel!

The Clique Summer Collection #2: Dylan (Clique Series)
Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: DYLAN is the second book in THE CLIQUE SUMMER COLLECTION, and lives up to the reputation of the CLIQUE series.
Dylan and her mom (who is a famous TV personality) travel to Hawaii to interview the world-famous tennis player, Svetlana. Svetlana has recently gotten out of rehab for her anger management issues, and this is her first match and interview since her last incident. Dylan and Svetlana get in a little tiff, but as a Clique member there is no way Svetlana will come out on top -- and with the guy Dylan wants.
Is there?
Dylan is quite the conniver, I must say. This was another great addition to the series as a whole, and I can't wait to read the rest of THE CLIQUE SUMMER COLLECTION!

The Mysterious Benedict Society
by Trenton Lee Stewart
Amazon Price: $12.23
Customer Review: What tremendous fun this is! I read the first 100 pages aloud to my mother after she had surgery. Then the book got so compelling and engaging that I had to race through silently and leave poor Mom to fend for herself. (I gave her a copy of her own for Mother's Day.) This novel is aimed at a middle reader audience, although great children's lit is always enjoyable to adults. At nearly 500 pages, it's a hefty doorstopper for that market, though a certain boy wizard has already repeatedly blown through our expectations about desirable book lengths for middle readers.
The story centers around four gifted children who respond to an ad promising "special opportunities" for select applicants. The application process is fun in and of itself (with riddles the reader can solve right alongside the characters), and then the adventure begins as these unlikely kids set out to save the world. One thing I liked about the story is that three of the four are unheralded poster children for the schoolage afflictions du jour: ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), and PAD (Pervasive Anxiety Disorder). Part of the fun of the novel is watching these kids realize that their quirks and disabilities are actually assets. Another wonderful aspect of the story is their teamwork and cooperation; each child contributes something unique and essential to the mission. The novel is clever, funny, and warm-hearted. I have just checked the sequel out of the library (after waiting for nearly three weeks, as every middle school kid in Cincinnati had signed up first).
My Weird School Daze #2: Mr. Sunny Is Funny! (My Weird School Daze)

Customer Review: My daughter, who was in 2nd grade, couldn't get into reading.

entire series. Now with this follow-up series "Weird School Daze" she
is thrilled to be able to keep reading!!

Summer School! What Genius Thought That Up? #8 (Hank Zipzer)
by Henry Winkler, Lin Oliver
Amazon Price: $4.99
Customer Review: My son loves the serie. And this is quite surprising, given that he comes from years of reading challenges. The fact that Hank -the main character- has learning challenges, but lives a rather exciting life in fourth grade, with his friends and family, has probably a lot to do with it. I personally like to sarcastic, realistic and hopeful undertone of the book, which is much like my son's psyche.

Ultimate Guide to Summer Opportunities for Teens: 200 Programs That Prepare Y...
by Sandra Berger
Amazon Price: $11.53
Customer Review: It's not too early to start thinking about summer programs for your gifted teenager. Opportunities abound for kids in their teen years. You could spend quite a few days searching the internet for a program to match your child's interests, and preferred location, or you could save yourself a lot of time and trouble by picking up a copy of Sandra L. Berger's handy reference guide, " The Ultimate Guide to Summer Opportunities for Teens". This book is over 300 pages long, and contains specific data on programs, eligibility, websites, and contact information. Not included in this guide is any reference to tuition or fees. Taking a closer look at some of the summer sessions noted, I found that some of these programs are quite costly, while others are designed especially for low income students.
This guide opens with an introduction that explains to students how they might benefit from taking a summer session. Chapter two focuses on college planning and test preparation. Chapter three outlines the different types of programs available, such as service learning, internships, and academic. The majority of the book is devoted to information on current offerings, with a single page entry for each opportunity selected. Details include program name, contact information, address, web site, program type, targeted grade level, and a brief description. These pages are organized alphabetically by state.
The back of the book has an index of opportunities by program type. This handy cross reference allows the student to look up programs for:
academic enrichment
fine, performing, and visual arts
gap year/study abroad
internships/paid positions
leadership/service/volunteer
math,sciences, engineering, and computer science/technology
Some of these entries seem to be categorized a bit haphazardly. Under academic enrichment, for instance, you can find "adventures in veterinary medicine" in Massachusetts. I would have expected this program to be included in the science category. A teen interested in journalism might easily miss seeing an entry in her chosen field, as the Carolina Journalism Institute is listed as academic enrichment, while Ball State University High School Summer Journalism Workshops sits under the heading of fine, performing, and visual arts. If program takes precedence over location, my advice is to read through the entire book to ensure that an extracurricular gem ...
